Need suggestions on new tires

Hi guys,

I have 68k miles on the original Dunlop tires and one of them is getting bald on the side. Did not realize it until I was trying to fix a leak at discount tire and was told they could not fix it.

The guys at discount tire recommend I changed the tires since the tires are old (made in 03 and 04). He recommended the BF Goodrich long trail T/A. I hardly do off-road driving. Just highway and city driving. I want a quiet and safe tire for wet roads (no snow in Houston). Any recommendations? How about Michelin?

i wouldnt get the long trail if i were you, the michelin ltx is a better choice, Michelin LTX A/T 2, revo 2 s are nice also Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2

x2. Other choices: Bridgestone Dueler H/L, Goodyear Forteras, Michelin LTX M/S, Michelin CTs, Yokohama Geolander H/T-S (cheap and good!), Firestone Destination A/T, etc..

For mainly road driving, Cross Terrains are your best choice IMO -- long lasting and easy rolling. I put on some Pirelli Scorpion ATRs about 15K miles ago and have been very happy with them on road and off -- they're quiet, grippy enough when needed and give as good gas mileage as something like the Dunlops. Tires with more aggressive treads will generally be noisier and might cut your mpg by a little bit.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had the Michelin m/s2 installed today. Got $120 discount, so I am happy with it.

Are you sure? I bought my 4R new with Bridgestone Dueler H/T-S, then i put BFG AT KOs, GYSA's, and now Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S and i have the same mpg on all of 'em. Only BFG AT KOs were noisy --but not annoying.

I added the caveat "generally"... obviously noise depends on a whole range of factors and even rolling resistance is as much influenced by tire compound and weight as by tread pattern. Just some things to consider.

i had the OEM Bridgestone Duelers for 60k miles, probably could've gotten another 2-3k out of 'em but it started to rain a lot so decided to change 'em. went with michelin LTX A/T 2's. in terms of ride, the bridgestones were more comfortable and quieter. in the rain, felt more grippy with the michelins, on sand, definitely the michelins, haven't done that much trail or snow stuff with the michelins yet but for this particular class of tire, all the tire guys i talked to (granted they were costco) said this would be a definite upgrade over the bridgestones. though i must say the bridgestones really did me well. but those guys at costco said the michelins were better and they were offering $70 off/set so there you go. wish i had found this forum 2 months ago then i definitely could've made a more informed decision.

I went with the Michelin LTX m/s 2's and so far have been happy with them. They are on an 06 Sport V-8.
They did well on a 1500 mile round trip to Colorado. Encountered wet and snow packed roads, and the tires performed well.
They also rode very well on the highway.
