I drive a 02 jeep wrangler with mods. I've owned somesort of jeep since i was 16. I am now 28. I am tired of driving a tent down the road. And i want a 4run. I have always like them. but i need to know a few things. I want to know what im getting my self into so tell me everything that can go wrong with a 3RD GEN. And a few other things
Problems? a/c fans/seats/overheating/radiator/trans/powerwindow motors.
What size tires can i fit on stock?
I noticed rear sag. on the ones I've looked at
trd super charger.(since i need more tourge and hp for off raoding.)
or do i need it.
rear elec. locker.... how common is it
4 low gear ratio/gear ratio
i can fit 33"/34"/35" how much is a lift so i can do that. how tall of a lift is it

These are all things i could tell you about jeeps. so i hope you guys could help me out.

I have had my 99 for 5 years and never had anything major break. only reg maintenence. I have had to clean my mass air flow sensor and replace an 02 sensor. my climate control lights burned out. $3 per bulb.

rear sag was mostly prior to 99.

no exp. w/ super charger.

265/75/16 is the largest tires I can fit without lift.

no rear locker. but would of like it. i dont think it is that common for them to have, but it was only like a $400 option when new.

Common issue is rear axle seals. Not a lot of things to look for other then that. I have the 3.4 and I wheel regularly and dont really need the supercharger. The factory Low range in the transfer case is 2.28:1. Look at Toyteclifts.com or Sonoran Steel.com for lift information both are very informative. I run bilstein coil overs up front and the Land Cruiser rears which is 3" up front and 4.5 rear. You can run 33" with the 3in lift and 35" with 3" suspension and 1.5" body with some "massaging"

hey how do you like that set up? and are those bilsteins the 5100 series?
not a true coil over but a coil over configuration right?

sorry to hijack but above from my understanding is the troof, nothing more to know really, just look for the rear diff button before you buy, i think most limited have the locker but i don;t think it's standard on any trim level? anyone care to comment on that?

Aside from the rear axle seals leaking I would check to make sure the timing belt was changed if the mileage is over 90k. Other than that no other common problems with the 3rd gen that I can think of right now.

I have 64k on my rig (I know that's really low mileage) but I've never had any problems with it, other than changing a broken serpentine belt.

If you really want lots of power I'd say a super charger would be good to have. But for me, it has enough power in its stock form. Having a locker would be good too, since you offroad. Finding a rig with one wouldn't be that hard, I think (but it depends on your location). But I really wish I had a locker!

a couple of nuisance items

the digital clock in the dash and the inaccurate fuel gauge are common nuisance items only.

Rear axle seals as mentioned. Replace/extend the rear diff breather and some say extend your axle seal life.

Most of us do not exceed 33" in tire size. Not to say more can not be done but you are risking big dollar repairs to suspension pieces, that is a lot of unsprung weight for our front ends.

No one really needs the supercharger-but they sure seem like fun. To do it right you need tranny and 7th injector fuel upgrades and will be running Premium Unleaded full time. You could own another well equipped parts rig for the full $$ outlay of supercharger and upgrades.

Rear electric locker can be found on some rides and is a relatively easy swap in if you wanted to add it later. I have one and have only needed it twice in off road situations.

Like any vehicle the 3rd gens have some quirks but the overall build quality is superb and the resale value reflects it.

if you can find a 3rd gen t4r that has been well maintained and you keep with the same it will last you forever, my 97 has 234K and with some of the mods i've done i can go where my buddies 4" lifted wrangler goes, recorded 18 mpg in Denver traffic.

2.5"-3" lift is common and you will have numerous options from different dealers (i like OME), most run 33's with these lifts.

Locker and supercharger is nice, but I have neither and sitll wheel.

what you are going to find when you get your runner is the very limited type/style/mfg for after market parts and accessories compared to jeeps, I love toyota and after owning and driving a jeep where you can buy a different bumper for every day of the week, it is my only gripe, I would love to open a catalog full of toyota 4r parts/bumpers/lights/tops/doors/lockers/lifts/armor, but it's not there.

Oh and as far as the rear sag, thats common with stock rear springs the lift will fix that.

look into 99's and up, they have better stock intake, taller stance, nice interior upgrades (compared to my '97), and don't worry about a supercharger unless you play in mud and need the xtra hp.
