My 03 SR5 V8 needs two tires replaced. There are 2 fairly new Bridgestone 840's on it. I would like to go to a better tire for snow traction. My searches seem to always end with either Blizzack DM-Z3's or Revo's. 265-65-17. These tires will stay on the vehicle all year, but I rarely drive it May thru Nov. Leaning towards the Revo's, but do I HAVE to put 4 of them on? It would kill me to ditch two fairly new tires. Also I've heard reports that the Revo's have a tendency to cup.
Need tire advice.

These Nokian WRs are "all-weather" tires that are severe snow rated and designed to be used year round. I have no experience with these particular tires, but I have had two sets of Nokian snow tires and they have been fantastic.
I would like to see somebody try these on an SUV or truck. Most all of the reports and reviews I have been able to find on the WRs have been for cars.

I'm no tire expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt...
From what I read and understand, it is okay to buy just two new tires as long you have the exact same tire on the same 'axle'.
If I remember right, you want to put the new tires on the rear. Why?...you want the rear to have most traction to prevent oversteer. (Apparently, understeer is better to have than oversteer.)
With VSC/ATRAC (and possibly 4wd), I'm not sure that matters any more.
I believe it is safer to have all 4 tires be the same type...all season, snow tires, summer tires, etc. For maximum safety, I think it is better to have all 4 tires have the same amount of potential traction.
But I have hear of people buying just two dedicated snow tires and putting them on the rear on a rwd vehicle with no real issues.
For a full time 4wd (not sure if yours is or not), it may not matter.

Nokians are great. Wife runs WRs on the Jetta, I run Vatiiva (AT) on the Runner. Vatiiva is not snowflake stamped - according to Nokian they never submitted it for testing. I know for a fact it does well on ice&moderate snow. For deep snow, and mud for that matter (think off-road) it needs bigger lugs. Also has plenty of siping and seems good in the rain. On dry pavement it is fine as a regular tire, certainly not performance oriented tho.

thanks for the responses...especially Baba B. I'll look into those Nokians. Yes jwyshrek, I'm concerned about how the alphabets would react to different levels of grip and diameter. I would not put just 2 Blizzaks on because I can only picture losing the rear end in a corner if the Blizzaks are on the front. They have tenacious grip. I was looking for an alternative solution and the Nokians might be it.

Since you have a V8 4WD, it's a full time system. It would be better to replace all four tires than just two, so that all tires are of the same overall diameter. I would keep the other two tires instead for spares, say some time down the line and one tire ends up with irrepairable damage, you can then always use the two newer tires now on the same axle.

Also, by law, tire shops are required to put new tires on the rear wheels so the vehicle has less tendency to fish tail. One can always rotate tires when they get home.

Front tires are always going to wear sooner then the rear because the wheels turn. Also there is the added weight of 4wd. With VSC I would put them on the front (cheap set), let them wear down to the rears and change them all at once (good set) and stay on top of the rotation.

The 2 Bridgestones I want to replace are original tires with 40K+ miles on them. I'm more than pleased with the treadwear.
That Goodyear triple tred looks like another excellent choice. At 161.00 it's a bit less than the Nokian that lists for 220.00 and less than the Revo.
The DM-Z3's are still tempting at the 135.00 ballpark.
