Need Tire Help

I'm about to install my lift (~1.5" in the front, stock rear) and will be needing new tires soon. I'm going with an AT tire, considerations are Revo 2's, Nitto TG's, Firestone AT's, and maybe another one or two. All the reviews on the tires are great, so I should be fine with any of them. My dilemma is what size I should go with. I do little off roading, mainly just getting to my hunting spots. I shouldn't be in any situations where I'd need the extra clearance provided by larger tires. So, should I upsize? I'm afraid stock 265/65/17's will look too little, but on a daily driver saving the gas mileage is important. Other sizes would be 255/75/17 (probably my preference at the moment) or 265/70/17. Would there be a noticeable difference in ride/handling with either size? Thanks!

check out cj3flyers thread on the goodyear wrangler with silent armor, they are very good tires & i think they would fit your needs.

I've looked at those, and his thread REALLY has me considering the 255/75's. I've never given the SA much thought, but the pricing is GREAT on them so would definitely be something to think about. I'm not gonna choose a tire just yet, I just need to determine what size I want.
 
Based on mine I am all about the 255/75 size... Everything about it is good and no .5-1.0 mpg hit that many experience with 265/70's. The .5" taller tire looks better too:D (That's .5" more than the 265/70) Looking at mine straight from the back or front you don't think "what are those skinny tires doing on that 4Runner?" Visually you don't notice the narrower but you sure do see the taller.

As for the GYSA's, they're good, very good. Are they the best tire ever? I don't know. If money wasn't an object I'd have the Revo2's but I have a Revo bias, I can't help it.

You know, with the V8** 275/75's might be cool if you want the wider, beefier look. I still think the 255's are a better way to go but I acknowledge, that to some, they lack the coolness of a wider tire. **I like a vehicle to feel, light, powerful, responsive etc. IMHO I wouldn't enjoy a V6 T4R w/275's. They be just wide enough that the rolling resistance would make the V6 work too hard for my tastes. I think a V8 would handle them just fine:bigok:If I wanted big tires on a V6 I'd go bigger than 275 and re-gear it...

I would go with bigger but as mentioned I have no use for them other than appearance. I don't want a hit in gas mileage. If my mpg will remain the same with 255/75/17 they will be the ticket. For overall wet/dry performance with a tad bit of snow and mud mixed in, would the silent armors be about the same as the revos?

I haven't had Revo2's but based on what I think they are: I suspect you would rate the GYSA at a 9.3 or 9.5 on a 1-10. I think I might rate the Revos a touch higher, like 9.4-9.5. Either way you'll have a great tire. At the current pricing on the GYSA (especially the 255) it's very hard to justify buying the Revo IMHO.

That's my opinion and very unscientific so take with a grain of salt or a bit of "I read that on the internet":D
 
I just haven't seen the sa listed with the others when talking about all terrain tires. As long as it offers a smooth and quiet ride with decent traction I will be happy. I have the bridgestone dueler ht right now and it seems to do good enough, so I'm sure either tire in question would be sufficient and if probably go cheap and get the silent armors. My biggest question (other than mpg drop which has been covered) is will one size offer better ride and handling than another? Thanks!
 
ark, just curious, why are you thinking of the revo 2 as opposed to the revo, as some thoughts & reviews are that the revo1 is the better of the 2. on the revo 1 compared to the gysa, (i have both on different vec.) id have to to agree with cj3flyer that they are damn close in everything ,but to me, the gysa is slightly quieter on the road, & seems a bit softer on ride feel, but thats it. the revo does have that tread pattern that makes it nicer in the looks department. another tire that seems under rated is the general grabber at2, it looks alot like the old bfg ta, & cost 125 per tire in 265/70/17. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfo...rgers-more/29961-general-grabber-at2-t4r.html
 
I know 1 mpg isn't much, but every little bit helps out. I'm not gonna say I've made a choice on tires just yet (was wanting the TG but they aren't offered in 255/75/17, so probably GY SA's as the best bang for the buck), but since they will look much better and not impact gas mileage negatively, looks like I'm sticking with the 255/75/17's. I've not been able to find the Revo 1's in any of the considered sizes. It will probably be 1-2 months before I make my purchase, and the way it looks it may be even harder to find them then. If they are so close, it's hard to justify the cost, as I'm not going to be pushing the limits of either tire. I've just always thought of the SA as more of a highway/snow tire than true AT. I see people wanting it for it's good snow performance, and not light mud. I won't see much of either, but more mud than snow (2-3 times a year for snow). I love the General Grabber AT2, just not available in 255/75/17. Any other opinions are welcome!

heres placethat still have the revo 1 265/70/17 for 165 Buy P265/70R17 Online | Buy Dueler A/T REVO Online | Buy Dueler Series Online | Buy Bridgestone Tires Online | Buy Tires Online | HighPerformanceTire.com the 255/75 (over 32) are taller than the 265/70 by about 1/2 is that what you want, most think the 265/70 is a good size, 1 up from stock, or are you going to that size just because of the cheaper price of the gysa in that size? other brands may not be cheap in that size. tire rack has the generals in 255 /70 (31.1) 127 a piece or 265/70 (31.7)136.

if every little bit helps, then why are you going to a 32.2 in. tire 255/75? the taller a tire gets the less mpg. so the smaller stock size is 265/65 (30.6) or the 265/70 (31.7) would be a better choice for mpg. its very difficult to tell the taller difference in size of the 255/75 from the 265/70 since its only about 1/2 in. taller but is also about that much narrower. sorry , im just curious why you have to stay with a 255/75 since it might be hard to find that size in the tire brand you might really want. its just my 2 cents but why settle for a tire or brand you dont really want just because its cheep. you can still find revo 1 online, but it is hard. just trying to help so either way, goodluck

I'm still debating, it just seems 255/75/17 is the best fit. Yes, it will be taller, but since it is narrower you have less contact patch and less resistance, thus not as bad on the gas mileage (in theory). CJ3Flyr confirmed that, no loss in gas mileage. 265/70's are cheaper in some tires (i.e. Revo 2), so price isn't the only factor. I'll pay for the right tire, but I'd rather not pay more than I have to. If the cheaper GYWSA's will suit all of my needs, why spend more on the Revo's and the like. The Dueler H/T's have been sufficient thus far, so any of the mentioned tires will be much better and do well for me. There are other tires I'm considering (Hankook Dynapro ATM), but really gotta choose my size first.
 
Bump, can anyone else comment on mpg loss with either size as compared to stock (255/75/17 vs 265/70/17)? After hours of searching over the last couple of days I have decided on the hankook dynapro ATM. This tire is offered in both sizes so I can go either way.
 
Good read, thanks! I'm not sure if this applies only a 1/2" difference, but gives me more reasoning to go with 255's. The 255/75's will be ~$100 more for the set, but it seems like they are the better deal. Unless someone has any other input, I'm going with 255/75/17. I'm also considering upgrading to 18" Limited wheels, in which case that'd mean 255/70/18 if I recall correctly.
 
when i upgraded to 265/70/17 revo2, I lost 1 mpg from my bald dunflops. The car feels more stable but i can also feel that the tires are heavier.
