ok, i need tires on the 2003 4runner.... what would u guys go for, i have had the stock michelin tires for 140,000 miles, altho i have the michelin on my 96 with 100,000 miles running stong, so im a bit scared to switch to other tires since people say they get 60,000 at most...



this truck is a DD and a weekend hunting rig, we go out in the winter to kansas in muddy, slowy, wet, greesy, mucky, slick A$$ roads, so that what this truck will be used for tire wise

Sometimes, the initial cost premium for Michelins is worth it. This is one of those times. Unless you're going for some serious 4x4 action, and willing to accept the pavement ride for it, I'd have to say stick with the michelins. I mean, how many tires do you know that can say they'll last 100,000 miles???? I've got the stock michelins on my 05 with 63k on the clock. I checked the tread depth yesterday with a penny, and I've clearly got a good ways to go before they'll need to be replaced!

Edit: I reread your post about use. Have you been using the michelins you've got now in those situations already? If so, do you like how they performed?

140k on 1 set of tires? How long are these tires on your car? Most people see around 60k on tires is the norm and 80k is on the high side.

I wouldn't keep a set of tires on my truck past 5 years which for me would be over 50k but I also wear them out by 50k and I'm using an A/T tire which with my off road excursions sees much more abuse than a street driven tire.
 
I agree on the Michelin Cross Terrain tires. I have a set on my 4Runner and I like them. They are excellent highway tires.

All things considered, make sure you get a high quality tire. Doesn't have to be the most expensive, but don't get the cheapest, either.
 
from the months oct-jan we go hunting, almost every weekend... so thats about the only time the truck will see offroad

these tires have been offroad as i mentiond earlier, they dont get the best of traction in the mud but then the computer takes over and thats how we get out of mudholes, so using the computer and some good tires i think this 4runner would be a good hunting rig.


but looks like most of this year we will be using my 96 with michelins A/T, and it works great... looks like ill go back to my michelins, thanks guys
 
Cross Terrains are great highway tires. The two couldn't be more different. I know it'll be a PITA swapping them out each weekend (or maybe run the TGs during hunting season and use the CTs the rest of the year), have you considered getting set of rims?

Or maybe look into a tire that's in between the two, like Bridgestone Revos. It's a highly regarded tire on the T4R.org.
 
the size i think is the stock 265/65R16, somethinglike that, but what do u mean load range? like how much weight i carry in the car?


well not during hunting season its empty, but hunting its about 200 LBS more
 
On the side of the tire it will say, in small letters, Load Range 'x'. It'll be a B,C,D or E. That letter tells you the catagory of the load range. There is also a max lbs value listed. It's a numeric value like 2350lbs. If it's an 'E' tire the number would be close to 3000lbs and the max inflation would be 80psi.

The only reason I ask is 'cause 140k on a set of tires is incredible. I can almost understand an 'E' load range tire lasting that long on a T4R as load 'E' tires are usually on F350/Chevy 3500 etc. If they are regular load range B tires you are to be complimented for driving easy and taking good care of them:D

let me go look... on we dont have any real survice information about these tires, but my dad thinks they were put on around 50,000 miles, and i think there is like 155,000 on the 4runner now, so its 100,000 miles on these tires.


the load range is 2337LBS with 35 PSI

but 100,000 miles for a tire is pretty good and i think i will go back with the cross terrain
 
I think good combo AT tires are .... I would stick with a P rated tire if you want the best of both worlds , if you want to have something stronger but a stiffer ride then go to an LT rated tire. Its all what your preference. They both get the job done .

I know you have got a lot of miles out of your current tires , but personally I run up to 40k on my tires and then replace them. I like having good tread . My current tires Revos have worn great with 49k miles on them . They need to be replaced . They ride nice , handle rain very well but when you hit a bad stretch of road you damn well know it.

I have to decide quickly on a tire , but talked to my father today and one I decide he will take it and get it done for me because of my time frame.

x2. If you survived this long on those Michelins without being stranded, then any of these will be an upgrade in terms of off-road traction. Of course, none of them can match the Michelin CT's on-road quiet ride.

I'm down for the Mitchelin's....great tires.
 
CTs all the way- I don't run off road that much. The CTs are pure luxury in the snow and on the autobahn. 40K on mine and they look like new. 20K on the Porsche C4S PS2s and they are 'bout gone. The CTs are the right tire for this vehicle unless you are off roading. Yeah, OK, I'll get it dirty one of these days! :bash:

I just rented a brand new '09 Chevy Trail Blazer and it does not hold a candle against the T4R. Shame on you Chevy!

No surprise there. ;):

I have CT's, definately a very good on-road tire. Mine's worked great in the rain and snow. Ice is different animal, but I think other tires unless it's specifically for winter.
