Need to have 4Runner Re-Keyed - anyone done it recently?

Long story short - my home was broken in to yesterday - good news is nobody was hurt and most everything can be replaces.

However, amongst the items stolen were the 2 spare keys for my 4Runner and a Prius. Apparently this is a common thing in Los Angeles and the thieves will sometimes come back for the car later when you are home. (these two cars are in the driveway and not in a garage)

Anyway, I am going to have both cars re-keyed and reprogrammed and sounds like my insurance may cover it.

Has anyone done this recently and know approximate cost?

Also - anything I should make sure they do properly? Never done this before and want to make sure it's not done half assed.

It will be expensive. It cost me $700 just to have a new master key made and programmed with the chip. You need all the cylinders replaced I'm thinking plus what I had. Hope insurance covers it.

Sorry to hear about the break in. Terrible feeling.

The dealer will do the re-keying for you.

If it were me I'd be inclined to install a tracking device in my vehicle instead, to hopefully (help the authorities) catch the people that broke into my home.

that sucks man. Pull the batteries to both of your vehicles if you haven't done so already and keep them in a safe place until you get them rekeyed... unless you want to trade up after they've been stolen.

Thanks. Thats a good idea. Until I get the 4runner re-keyed I'll pull the battery. Hope to have it done in the next 3 days.

If they want the Prius, they can have it.

Just a thought. In addition to pulling the battery, consider slightly unseat a major harness or spark plugs. Also wipe down both door handles and the hood release. You would need to set a tell so you could determine in the morning if someone was in your car. Probably would take you under five minutes. If the perps has a record, their prints are on file. The tell is probably the most important to get the LEOs to look for prints. Now that I wrote this probably wise to check with LEO to see if they would come out if you possibly you had prints of the perps.

My brother lives in MI and in the 80s, there was a retired engineer from GM, I believe, that built car alarms systems. Him and his son had a box that they would connect to your car. The car wouldn't start unless you activated a switch such as power door locks a preset number of times. You picked the switch and the number. I wonder if something like this is available. Might be a stop gap till you get the car rekeyed.

The box looked so factory it didn't stand out at all. They used wire looms etc. It was a great use of the engineers skill set.
