Need to vent..

I've been on the search for a 4runner for far too long now. The specific requirements I'm looking for are rather strict I guess, which doesn't help, but man, it feels like only a few of these exist in the Western US at any one point.. and traveling interstate to "potentially" buy a car is a costly investment in both time and money if it doesn't pan out.

How did you guys all luck out with your vehicles? Every time I see a nice one pop up it's gone before I can get around to looking at it. My fall road trip in CO is fast approaching and it's looking more and more like I'll be tackling it with our current 2013 Mazda 3 instead..

I happened to know someone at the dealership. Got notice as soon as my runner hit the lot. Scheduled an appointment, then proceeded with the purchase. I bought used, but still had the inside.

Problem seems to be that I always want a vehicle checked by a mechanic before purchasing, but the only time I can get to a dealership to check the vehicle out is on a weekend when mechanics are closed. Then it's sold by time Monday rolls around.

you need to work with a salesman for each dealership. let them know you are looking for one so they can check other dealerships and when one comes in they can call you. let them do the work!

What are your requirements? Maybe someone on this site has one they would sell you.

2006-2009, 4X4, V6, clean carfax, under 135k miles (preferably lower), preferably sports edition (love that hood scoop too much, it's a weakness I know), no rust, great condition, black/silver/white/gray, reasonable price (pretty dang hard to find in CO).

The only ones I've found around that match this (without seeing them in person) are one in Phoenix and one in Austin. Really don't want to go all the way out to these places just to notice one problem and fly back.

One of the forum members PM'd me, asking about my recent buying experience (I bought a 4Runner 1 week ago today... sight unseen!).

I wrote a few posts back to him (as PM's) with LOTS of advice on what I would do. I also posted some advice to a thread for a user who's looking for to buy his first 4Runner. Most relevant to the advice (at least in my opinion) was that I shared a spreadsheet that I had used to narrow down the MORE THAN 400 4RUNNERS that I looked for on line, down to only the TOP 47 that I was interested in !!! (Yes... even I will admit that I went too far).

With that as the back drop, the user who I PM'd said that should start a thread about shopping for a 4Runner. He said that my advice was really helpful, and he keeps referring back to it.

So, with your request, on how to shop for a 4Runner. I'll start that thread.

I'm no authority, but if it helps someone, then great!

Look for the thread to be posted later today...

and good luck shopping.

Should be interesting, thanks Phil.

I've had a couple tell me they wouldn't do it.

Then they are sheisters and don't go through them. If they won't take care of a new customer in purchasing a vehicle, they definitely aren't going to take care of you after you bought the vehicle.

Very true. It's frustrating, especially out here in CO where every man and his dog is looking for a 4Runner it seems.

Well dang if we were closer I'd think about selling you mine plus I don't have a sport edition I didn't like the scoop

I'm considering selling mine (trading it for a Gen5) and I want it sold out of state. I'll keep you in mind if things happen.

Sounds perfect. I'd definitely be interested. Keep me posted! I'm hoping to buy in the next couple of weeks though if possible! Interested to know why you want it sold out of state though?

Mine is an 07 and I purchased it in 07, though it was considered used since it had 9K miles on it. It currently has 25K. It's never given me one problem! It's been loyal all the way through. I'm still very much attached to it and the reason I don't want it sold local is because I don't want to see it get beat to hell. I'd be livid and there wouldn't be anything I could do. So If I can sell out of state, I wouldn't have the chance of seeing it and regretting what I did.
It's got mods, as you can see... and everything that's been done to it is noted there, in my build thread. It's had hail damage and a small front in bumper hit but all professionally repaired.

Definitely let me know when/if you decide to get rid of it and we can talk further details :)
