IDK - ive bought and sold a lot of vehicles. Lol Can’t imagine you’ll take a bath or anything trading it in, the resale on these is crazy. But, you aren’t getting a different truck, just some more bells and whistles. I’d personally wait for the redesign... let the first year bugs get worked out and buy a new 2022. With the low miles you put in each year, I’d imagine your 4R is going to be worth about the same in 2 years as it is right now. My kids got bored with the SR5 look and convinced me to go Faux Pro. Lol. I think it looks good! Less than $1,000 all in for the rims, grill, badges and side steps. As someone else recommended, maybe going Faux Pro will keep you interested until the redesign.

I am trading in my 2016 Limited on a 2019 Limited so I understand where you are coming from.

For one, as great in this community is for many things, it’s very easy to get swept up in a thought system that’s not exactly reality. As you note, most of your driving is on road with very limited off-road excursions. I have taken my Limited off-road with Trails, ORs, TRD Pros, and SR5s - all modded - and kept up fine. The only modification is tires and wheels.

I think most 4Runner buyers visually gravitate towards the more off-road oriented offerings like TRD Pro and OR, but it’s also important to step back and examine your own usage and driving habits.

A number of the people here with lifts, skids and major modifications still spend 98% of their drive time on road. The price you pay for the 2% of off-roading and instagram photo opportunities is huge - but still worth it to some.

The Limited is still a tremendously capable vehicle in stock form, and at this point, the 4Runner is so woefully outdated that the few trim changes on the Limited are equivalent to mid-spec features on the competition. The Limited is/was the only way that I personally could justify the purchase because it had features that were basically status quo for the rest of the industry, and the other trims are so sparsely optioned. Heated and cooled seats are a huge deal for me living in the south. Keyless entry is another daily convenience you couldn’t even get on the other models. JBL audio is a must-have if you like music. I really don’t see X-REAS as a value add, but it’s fine. I also despise the shiny black reflective trim pieces on the other 4Runner trims - it looks fitting for a Y2K econobox, not a 2019 $35-50k SUV. The silver pieces on the Limited are also outdated, but more appealing and less cheap looking.

So, it’s really about choice and what works for you. I’m opting for a 2019 Limited because:
- I am personally becoming tech averse and dislike how companies are collecting and using all of our data, so I did not want a 2020 with CarPlay
- I believe the 5th gen 4Runner may be the last with a naturally aspirated V6 engine as rumor is that Toyota is replacing their V6 with a turbo 4.
- 5th gen has run so long now that it’s apt to be even more bulletproof than other generations as the years have progressed
- I really like the general formula of the 5th gen and would like to have a late model example to keep for the future for all of the reasons above
- While the TRD Pro has some nicer features now, the ventilated seats are a big one for me because of hot Georgia summers. That’s a feature I’ll use every day. Fox shocks and a locking rear diff are not.
- The 2020 is going up in price, Toyota is increasing their delivery and handling fee as of 8/31/19, and as you note, dealers are running great deals on 2019s right now.
- I still absolutely love the Redwood leather color

The Limited is a great day-to-day, “every man’s” 4Runner and I think you would be pleasantly surprised. Swapping out the wheels and blacking out the whole or partial front bumper makes a 180 degree difference and I actually like the blacked out Limited front end more than the robotic bulldog looking front end of the other models.

Tip if your looking to kill the new 4runner itch for what its worth

Pay off your truck and find another hobby to add to your life. Something you always wanted to get into but know nothing about. You will be spending on things you didn't know exist in no time

I doubt it.

Keep what you have, and pay that sucker off. Now you have an extremely low mileage vehicle that will easily go another 250k, easy.

Now sit back and enjoy not having a car payment for the next decade.

That 5, 600 bucks a month your saving on the payment can go toward retirement, paying off your house, or buying a house if you don't have one.

Not having a payment is an amazing thing. I bought mine in Feb, and still have just over 20k to pay off. I'm kicking myself HARD for buying this thing and getting back into a payment situation. I'm going Dave Ramsey on this biotch in order to get that payment gone so I can start putting my money toward the IMPORTANT things in life. If I live like a miser, I can prob get it paid off by May, June the latest.

Financing a car is for suckers, I'm never doing it again.

I would say BUY a new 4Runner if 1. Your net worth is over $1million and you can afford to take the deprecation value(yes, even 4Rs go down in value). 2. All your debts are paid off, student loans, credit cards, personal loans, the mortgage. 3. You have a fully funded emergency fund of 3-6months.

Listen to Dave Ramsey broski, he'll change your life. I haven't had a car payment in over 10 years and will never finance a vehicle EVER. Living debt free is wonderful and it allows me to live the life I want. As someone already mentioned, keep the 4R, and take up a hobby that you'd enjoy and spend the money on that. I did that, took up golf, and now I golf 4 days a week, and have gotten my handicap down to a +0.6. I shot my best round 2 weeks ago, a 6 under par 65 at my home course. People ask me all the time if I'm retired(I'm 40) and how I can golf 4 days a week. One reason for that is that I'm not paying $600-800/month(car payment+insurance). I lived that life...BUY BUY BUY...WORK WORK WORK!!! And let me tell you, I DO NOT miss it one bit. I work 3 days a week, if they need help at work, sure, I'll put in an extra shift, but my finances are such that I don't have to work extra.

Part of the journey to becoming a millionaire is contentment and gratitude. Live YOUR life, you'll enjoy life much more when you don't give a damn what other people think of what you drive and where you live and where you go on vacation. Peace.

Unfortunately, not free and clear yet, but very close! I took no $ to closing and rolled taxes into the financing too. Not the wisest financial decision, but it's what I did.

As for incentives, not so much from Toyota per se, but I'm noticing more dealer discounts advertised to move the remaining 19's. The incentive is they seem more willing to deal than usual at the moment.

As for my 4R, I really do like it. I don't see a need to trade for another TEP, but every time I consider a Limited I have this thought in my head that I'll really regret the trade. As I previously noted, the Pro is cool and all, but is essentially just a gussied up TEP. I could build mine into a Pro if I really wanted for less than buying a new one.

Anyone have tips for getting over these urges for shiny new things? lol

I like the suggestion about getting hands on with upgrades to rekindle the "relationship" with the 4R. I've shied away from doing much with it to this point because it's a perfect functioning relatively new vehicle - I didn't want to mess anything up. With some of the (admittedly minor in the grand scheme of things) grievances I have with it, and some free cash flow, it may be time to change that. The risk/reward equation is changing in my mind.

Any other thoughts?

Buy smaller less expensive shiny new things like a UTV

Oh man, I hope that never happens with the 4runner.

I'm not aware of any capable SUV that's meant to tow and go offroad with a FI 4 cylinder engine. The 4runner is already under powered as is so to put less cylinders in it just to make it work harder would be extraordinarily embarrassing.

Agreed. However, word is that a new turbocharged 2.4 or 2.5L I4 putting out around 285hp will replace the GR V6 in all applications. I hope it's wrong.

Looking at the trend of scratching V8s in favor of TTV6s - like they did with the LS, and will soon with the Tundra, Land Cruiser and LX - it seems like the writing is on the wall.

For some reason 4Runner prices have been low in my are for both buy (good) and sell (bad). Have a 2019 TRD OR Premium and have been quoted twice at $33.5k for trading in. One dealer said he was selling new premiums for $36k. He didn’t say if TRD OR but still. Crazy.
