dumb parking gate at work decided to close on and scrape my car. In your opinion do you think it would be better if I took this into to shop or do you think I can tackled this on my own? The scrape is on edges of the left rear hatch and the car. All your opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanx guys!

Is it down to the primer? If not, you can wipe it off with some elbow grease and rubbing compound. If it's down to the primer and because it's not a thin scrape (it's pretty wide), you should have it painted.
By the way, sorry this happened to you. I've touched mine up in two places so far (Scratch X) and it's depressing.
If it didn't happen due to your own negligence, I'd recommend talking to your employer (or whoever owns the building) about taking care of it before doing anything. Go ahead and get a quote from wherever you'd usually take it, and press them if necessary on their responsibility for the damage.

Our employers first response was that it was his risk by parking there. They reversed that decision pretty quickly when he had a more senior manager look into it.
Whether you get someone else to pay for it or not, I'd personally get it taken care of professionally.

Agreed. Did the gate malfunction? Sounds to me like the employer should cover the couple hundred bucks or so it will cost to fix.

Do the fingernail test: if your fingernail gets hung up on the scratch then it's too deep to buff out. I first recommend touch up paint and https://www.langka.com/index.php. If that doesn't work, then take it to a good body shop.
If your fingernail doesn't get hung up on the scratch, then have it wet sanded and buffed. Or you could try ScratchX.

If it's not too deep, a good wash --> ScratchX buff --> polish --> carnauba wax seems to do the trick quite well.
I used to have tons of arizona pinstripping but not anymore! It all came out (hundreds of scratches).
I agree with the others though -- If it's a malfunction get them to pay a pro to take it out.
I've even gone after the city for pothole damage. They have a fund for things like that. Fix your damn potholes and my rims wont get dented!

My dad's brand new Infiniti was scratched (to the metal) on the A-pillar, hood, and fender by a parking gate that dropped on it as he was exiting. He filed a report with the building's management and the parking vendor's insurance covered the repair (came out to about $900 + a rental car).
A friend also had his 4Runner's hood scratched when the parking arm dropped on it. It left about a 12-inch gash (also to the metal) on his hood. The parking garage's insurance covered the repair (was at least several hundred dollars + rental car expense, I believe).
Hopefully you filed a report when it happened...in both cases, they both immediately asked for a manager and had the incident documented.
