Negative Experience with TRDParts4U (Toyotal of Dallas). UPS Shipping to Canada Issue

Hi guys,

I wanted to get your thoughts on a recent order I had with TRDParts4U in which I bought $750 worth of new OME springs and shocks for my 3rd gen 4Runner. I live in Canada, and as most Canadians know, we get screwed on shipping if UPS were to be used...which is why I typically avoid UPS.

When I placed my order I did a shipping estimate for Canada and it SPECIFICALLY mentioned that a $136 Fedex Ground option would be used as the shipping carrier. I do realize at the Cart checkout page and as per TRDParts4U's FAQ there is a disclaimer on international shipping in that freight charges would be quoted separate...but there is NO mention that they are free to use whatever shipping company they'd like.

I would assume that if their shipping estimator says Fedex, then Fedex should be used.

I called their customer service line and was basically told I am screwed.

Do you guys have any thoughts on this and if there might be any recourse on what I can do? The package has already been shipped via UPS. If I refuse delivery I was informed I would only get a refund on the parts and not the shipping. I am basically going to get @ss raped if I am forced to accept UPS's brokerage and duty fees.

Do you know how much they will be charging you or are you just panicking ahead of time ?
Its usually the brokerage and their paperwork fees that is the ass-raping , not the actual shipping fee. Call UPS and just ask what the brokerage and associated fees will be .
Years ago I bought an amp from Cal. and it came UPS , well the brokerage and paperwork were more then half what I paid for the amp , I just about had a ****ing stroke lol .

Yes, UPS sucks but that's not the issue. If you re-read my initial post, the problem is them quoting one shipping company and using another...then refusing any sort of responsibility when confronted.

Not usually a big deal, but for us Canadians using a carrier like UPS is the difference between getting @ss raped on brokerage or not.

Did you use a credit card for this purchase? Not sure how your card handles this sort of thing - I would call the credit card company and tell them I was misled on shipping and didn't want to pay. My credit card company would reverse the charges...

I have known the Parts4U guys for years, and I have spent thousands with them. I would bet they had no idea about the fees and thought it was of no consequence. It just does not sound like them IMO.

In any case, how much more was it for the shipping fees?

It really isnt anything to do with actual shipping costs , it is the insane prices that UPS charges for paperwork and brokerage fees in regards to items coming across the border . You can be charged 50 bucks on a 40 dollar item , things like that . When I order from the US I go to great lengths to ensure that the items will not go UPS just for that reason .

If I was the OP I would call UPS and just ask what the fees will be , they should know . Might be 50 or 300 , then he can decide what the best course is .

^Yup. Customers from the US dont have to deal with this sort of thing, but we do as Canadians. I fully understand if I were to purchase from an online merchant with disclosure that UPS would be used, then it would be my own responsibility for any extra charges.

The problem I am having with Toyota of Dallas is that the whole ordering process (and shipping estimate) references Fedex as the method to be used. I shop online enough such that I too will go great lengths to avoid UPS shipping for the very reason discussed above.

I dont even mind that they screwed up on this, heck misunderstandings happen. What's ridiculous is that when asked about this mistake, they merely hide behind their company policy of using whatever shipping they deem fits them without addressing the misinformation of their ordering system. No attempt to address the issue or even split some of the UPS costs.

The way in which some of these companies handle such customer issues speaks volumes on how they choose to run their business.

Did you specifically ask them before placing your order to send it via FedEX? I am looking on their website terms and conditions and it seems to flat out say that they will use UPS or USPS depending on size (orders going to Canada).

TERMS & CONDITIONS -

MINIMUM ORDER OF $20 IN MERCHANDISE IS REQUIRED FOR ORDER TO PROCESS.

PLEASE ALSO SEE AND READ OUR FAQ PAGES

PLEASE ALSO SEE AND READ OUR PRIVACY POLICY PAGE

Major Credit Card must prepay all products ordered from this website. We do NOT accept COD orders. For purchasers outside the USA and Canada, PayPal ($3 transaction fee per Paypal transaction) is the only accepted payment method.

All orders are shipped FEDEX Home or ground by default. Shipping carrier substitutions may be made at our determination in an attempt to reduce shipping costs for us and the customer. For example, parts going to Canada we will ship US mail - Priority or Parcel, whichever is closest to the price charged on the order for shipping, or if the package is too large for USmail, UPS international standard will be used. If you have a special shipping request, arrangements must be made prior to, or immediately after ordering, with a note/message on your order referring to a shipping quote we emailed to you.

I understand your frustration, but if I already knew before hand that something as simple as switching a shipping carrier could cause such troubles, I would try to get some written confirmation for my own peace of mind instead of just assuming. To be honest, I don't really see what wrong they have done since it was clearly spelled out on their website...not sure how far it's going to get disputing it with your credit card company. If I was in your shoes, I would just chalk this up as an expensive learning experience and call it a day.

You can always decline their brokerage services and do it yourself I was told this by a CBSA officer the 2nd to last time I had somethings brought in.. You need the original bill of sale and some shipping paper work..Then find a service Canada office or even CBSA office and do all the taxes and exchange yourself.. I live in Victoria on Vancouver Island and I get a freight forwarder to bring my stuff from their depot in Washington State over for a fee this way I can take advantage of any free in the US shipping... The running around the first time is a pain but once you know where to go it's a breeze and to pay any courier a pile of $ for something that takes them like 5 mins is a rip off..Just gotta love livin in Canada

love most everything but the shipping rates. all too often I find products I want from the states and end up putting them in my cart only to see that I'm being charged 50% of the cost of the item to ship it

This is exactly what I did when I ordered my BajaRack. When it arrived I got a call that it was at the customs warehouse in Calgary, so I drove over, filled out the necessary paperwork, paid some GST, then my rack was released for delivery to my door and arrived the next morning. The paperwork took me about half an hour and I had no real clue what I was doing. As soon as you get your tracking number, call UPS and tell them that you are going to broker it yourself.

I missed this before. Seeing that you're in Calgary have you checked out the Montana Shipping Outlet in Sweetgrass? Give that as your shipping address and they receive it for you and charge a small daily fee to keep it there. Guys on CT4WD regularly use this and one guy will make a run down with a Tacoma to pick everyone's stuff up. Even with the MSO fee and paying gas money to pick the item up you still come out way ahead. I did this with my SCS wheels and the MSO fee, GST, and my share of the gas still only came to $70 even though the wheels sat there for a couple weeks.

Yeah, I did hear about that MSO on CT4WD, Rickashay mentioned it when I asked him about his roof rack he bought from WMW in Florida.

I didn't know someone makes runs down to MSO in his Tacoma though so that's good to know. Just for future reference, what is the Tacoma guys contact info?

Are you the silver 5th gen I see on 17 ave quite often? with the bud built decal on the window.

Cheers.

There's no one person who does it, every so often someone might post that they're doing an MSO run to see if anyone else needs something picked up.

Yeah, that's probably me.
