Never lose your keys

Here is something i was supposed to write up months ago but never did.
A friend accidentally misplaced my truck keys, terrible mistake, *note: we were drinking alot of SODAs that night. Anyway somehow keys were gone forever.

After a few weeks I went to get another key made up for the truck. Heres what happened:
1. Bought a $15 toyota 4Runner specific key off ebay, with all correct specifications, key store was from NJ, they attempted to help but this key just didnt work when attempted to be programmed

2. When to several auto locksmith specialists in my area to have the ebay key coded. Nothing worked, 2 places even used their after market keys to attempt programming, still nothing worked! This was several hours of attempting to reprogram the trucks key computer

3. Had to go to the stealership!! had no choice. The dealership attempted to code my ebay key, which was nice of them, but no luck

4. Key programmer at stealer told/showed me that their is a small circle on the base of the metal of your authentic toyota factory key, this is true look at it. This magic circle does something magic in binary code, that nothing else would do.

5. Had to buy a toyota key from parts, $50 maybe, Had to have toyota reprogram truck computer $280++!!, maybe took an hour. But it worked

:bash: HERES THE CATCH!!!
The toyota key tech told me that i had lost the MASTER KEY,
therefor no key would programable unless an authentic toyota key, your spare/other factory key (NOT VALET), was reprogrammed as the master, then, ONLY THEN, other keys could be programmed. at a cheaper price of course

SO next time your at the dealership, have them tell you which key is your master, then take master key and place it in bomb/fire proof safe!

That is great to know. I bought my 4runner second hand and was able to get 3 remotes and about 4 keys. The dealer was surprised at all the keys. Would make sense for me to keep the MASTER safe. Thanks!

Don't lose both of your master keys, a master is needed to program new keys to the 4Runner. The valet can't program additional/new keys.

The manual specifically outlines this and mention ECU replacement is needed. I would've expected ECU replacement costing more though.
