new 2005 v8....oil consumption

In March I got a 2005 v8 brand new. I am changing oil every 5000 miles and using synthetic. I find that I have to add 1/2 a quart between changes....I'm at 22,000 miles at this point. The oil use seems unusual to me.

Other than this worry, I love the vehicle.

Anyone else going through any oil? Should I be concerned?

Well, from my own personal experience (aka no technical data to back it up), the way that you break-in your vehicle makes a difference to your oil consumption. For example, when i had my BMW M3, i followed BMW's break-in instructions to the letter...no oil issue at all. Now, many of my fellow M3 owners had tons of oil issue...most of them did not follow BMW instructions.

Over the past few years, i have owned a few cars. None had any oil issue. I follow manufacturer's break-in procedure.

Did you run your 4runner hard when you first bought it?? Did you buy it used?? How many miles on your 4runner when you got it??

I bought it brand new (21 miles on it) and babied it per the manual's instructions....as I recall for the first 2000 miles or so.....mostly on long trips on which I varied the speeds alot.

Let me guess you are running Mobil 1 Syn right? Its normal for an engine to comsume SOME oil. My 04 V-6 usually consumes about 1/2-3/4 quart about every 5k.

I'm using BMW synthetic.....the Toyota dealer is a BMW dealer too, so they suggested that instead of Mobil One.

I know the manual says some oil consumption is normal. I just got spoiled by my 98 Mercedes ML320.....which has 180,000 miles on it and doesn't take a drop of oil between changes.

I would ask where BMW buys thier oil. I am sure its rebottled M1 or possibly castrol syn. WHo knows. I doubt BMW has its own oil refinery!

Try using another brand of syn oil. See if the consumption goes down.

I promise you its the oil. Just experiment on what oil runs best in your 4R. Used Oil Analysis is the best way to see how your engine is doing.


I can get Oil Analysis kits for about 15 bucks from amsoil. Let me know if you are interested in that.

Guess I just don't understand why people use synthetic oil in the Toyota V8 engine. This engine is one of the easiest engines on oil and will run longer then you want to keep it on a good dino oil. I've used Castrol GTX since new and followed Toyota breakin recommendations. Changed oil/filter at 1000 miles and then again at 3000 miles and then every 3750 miles. I now have 27K miles on my 4runner and it uses no oil between changes. I'm very happy with this engine. I will continue to change oil every 3-3750 miles versus going to synthetic and going 5K miles.

I knew some earlier Toyota v6's had sludge probs, so I went with synthetic to be extra careful.

Sorry let me clarify, with M1 I seem to have oil loss.

It shouldn't matter what oil you are using. Oil loss isn't dependant on a certain brand. If there is a leak somewhere it doesn't matter what you use.

Misunderstood my meaning, sorry, just saying that a good dino will work fine and normally you won't use any oil with the dino, plus it costs less. At least that is my experience. My LC never used oil when I used a good dino oil but when I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic it used some oil. Not enough to worry about. If you are using 1/2 qt in 5000 miles I would not worry at all.

Wrong.. Certin brands do leak more than others. It really boils down to what brand X motor oils base stock and additives are composed of. Over at Bobistheoilguy forums many, many people have noticed oil comsumption with Mobil 1 motor oil. I am not just making this up because I am an Amsoil rep. Honestly!

I have the V-6, not the 8, so maybe the engine has something to do with it (but I doubt it). I have been using Mobil 1 since 3k. I change oil every 5k, but change the filter every 2.5k. Except for topping off after filter change (usually 1/2 pint) I have not noted any oil loss at all. Now at 30k.

With my 95 LC I used oil when I used Mobil 1 (not much, maybe 1 qt every 5K miles) when I used Amsoil Synthetic it did not use any oil. I agree different oil in different engines will act differently.

I have never had to add a drop of oil in between 4-5K mile changes using 10/30 and 5/30 Shell brand oil. Sweet engine at 42K miles.

I used Mobil 1 in a Ford engine and I could hear the valves tapping at freeway speed, I swore off of synthetics, just change your oil/filter every 3-5K miles and your golden.

Maybe i am outdated with my knowledge...but isn't it better to use regular oil for the first 10K miles or something...and then switch to synthetic??? Doesn't the regular oil help the seals better during break-in period??

I use whatever oil the dealer has in bulk in the correct weight and never experience any loss between oil changes.

I don't really "baby" motors during break-in either......don't go hog wild on them, but don't like to take it tooo easy. Gotta seat everything in nicely and loosen it up a bit
