Pros and Cons of GX460

Lots of pluses for the Lexus GX460.
The cons are:
Price for the same age, new model
The GX weighs 400 pounds more
The 3rd row seat and higher cargo floor seem to be the only option
The GX is 4" taller. If you put a roof rack on it you'll have trouble with low parking garages
There are more aftermarket accessories for the T4R, especially the Trail and SR5, The T4R Limited and the GX460 needs to be modified to accept rock rails
The GX460 runs on Premium, the 4Runner runs on regular. 20 cents per gallon difference
The gas mileage is lower on the GX:

heres a lifted GX470 that "adventure driven" guys have been overloading with great results... id go GX if i had the time a patience to do all the mods...the end result would be much better IMO. The Lexus GX is the Toyota Prado/Land Cruiser dressed up as a Lexus (more wood, leather and plastic) for the US market. its easily one of the most popular platform around the world for off roading/overlanding...with good reason.

I would go with the GX hands down. The 4R is exactly what it seems to be, a stripped down GX. The V6 is a dog, the interior doesn't feel anything like $40,000, the headroom with a sunroof is terrible, the one thing that it really has going for it over 99% of cars out there is build quality but the GX is in that 1% too.

I get going for the cheap one when your budget ends there but with 5 years of cherry GXs out there and as expensive as a new Limited is, why settle?

Why I bought a T4R

I think you're asking me this question. The subject has been beaten to death here already, but I'll give you my reasons.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a beautiful SUV. It's a unibody SUV with better road handling characteristics. The QuadraTracII could be a very good system.

The Jeep GC has fewer aftermarket accessories available, like rock rails and lift suspensions, etc. The Jeep is probably not as capable off-road as the T4R Trail.

But the Jeeps are getting really poor owner reviews. The Grand Cherokee Limited or Overland have a lot of electronic systems that tend to fail. Owners say the dealers can't or won't fix them, even under warranty. Owner satisfaction is much lower than with the reliable, durable T4R. The resale value drops much quicker on a Jeep than a Toyota 4Runner, but that also means you can buy a used Jeep for less.

The T4R is a much simpler, basic SUV, with body on frame stiffness and a 4x4 system that is much simpler, more basic, more reliable and easier to repair if it does break. The Trail Edition is more capable off-road than my current 1995 Jeep GC, which is a fine, reliable, simpler SUV. The T4R is better off-road than most SUV in the US market. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited may be more capable, but I don't like the looks or the ride.

For myself, I don't need all the luxury finish of the T4R Limited or the Lexus GX460. I want more ground clearance and rock sliders. I'm trying to get better gas mileage and use regular gas, not premium. While the Jeep and the Lexus are appealing, the gas mileage is the same as I'm getting now with my 1995 Jeep GC. If I bought the Jeep I'd want the 5.7L V8 and then there'd be no improvement in my gas mileage.

The price of gas will go up again during the life of my next vehicle (10 years?), so I have to plan for $5 per gallon gas.

I put 100k miles on a 2007 GX 470 "sport" w/KDSS.

Loved, loved that truck. Eventually I got the itch for something new. I'd been following the 460 and the general sense I got from the boards was they'd added complexity and tech and lost a bit in terms of reliability. In particular, things I didn't like:
1) lots of complaints about persistent wheel balance issues that folks weren't able to solve
2) the 3rd row thing is just stupid IMO. You lose a bunch of cargo space, and one of the reasons I'm buying a rig like this is cargo space.

The engine is nice. I loved the 4.7 in my GX470. I miss that drivetrain so much in my T4R.

But, I do love the raw simplicity of the 4R. The air shocks were always a worry and headache in the GX, for instance. And people were having trouble with the dual zone AC over time. I think the 4R is like a cockroach. Nice and simple, and indestructible (I hope).

And, personally I hated the Lexus vibe. I wanted a Prado, frankly. I would have paid more for the 4R than I did to get the build quality improvements in the Lexus. If the 200 wasn't so big...
