New 3 Series... Thoughts!

The new BMW 3 Series - BBC Top Gear

From what i have read they have done away with the N/A engines in atleast the Non-M division 3 series and have only turbocharged engines available. I like that idea, and the fact that its offered with a manual and is rear or all wheel drive, but the styling on this model, really doesn't appeal too me. To me i feel they have made a toyota camry with a BMW badge, it just looks so bland and "beige" if you know what i mean, it also feels like they achieved this by just hitting 80% on the 5 series and photoshopped a few bits different. Anyone else have thoughts on this?


(But i was a big fan of the E90/91/92 sedan, not so much the E46, and i loved the E36 and E30, but i really dont see this body style growing on me)

I think they are perfect for teenage girls.

On another note, it's disappointing that even luxury makers are now putting 4-bangers in their bottom of the line models.
 
Looks like a smaller version of the new F10 to me. I think this one will grow on me. I was a fan of the E46 but not so much of the E90. It kinda bums me out that they're going with a turbo-4 in the 328i. While I understand the efficiency of it, it's just not as smooth as an inline-6.

This one will be on my list in the near future. Lexus should be releasing their new IS, Audi should have a new A4 and Infiniti should be releasing their new G in a year or two.
 
4cyl turbo gives up maybe a little smoothness, but the economy is better, and tuning abilities are now endless, you get alot more out of tuning a turbo'd car than a NA car, and its now really easy to put a bigger turbo on it! So with the reletive cheapness of the 328i and the tuning potential of its motor we may see some M3 killers as 328i for relatively cheap compared to the M3...

Yeah, i must be getting old...but i disagree with John...i like the new look on the 3-series...more so than the before. I like it. But, like tkr, i like the E46 styling a bit more...but this redesign makes it my favorite 3 series design. But, i am getting older and blander...so, my opinion doesn't mean much...oh yeah, i am color-blind too! :(

To be honest, though, i would never buy a BMW (nor Audi)...nothing but trouble once your warranty runs out. It would be a perfect lease car...but that's about it. At this point, i rather get a Mercedes over BMW (if those were the only choices) because i feel MB makes higher quality cars nowadays...still behind Lexus, but better than the POS decades of the 1990's and early-mid 2000's. But, i do think that BMW has better style than MB.
 
i think its a beautiful car, and i love how they have 4cyl version, most think of 4cyl as week, but then again most people never been to japan

yeah agreed. line up a subie sti or mitsu evo and see if they still think 4 bangers are reserved for slow cars. Those cars can show up a lot of 6cyls and 8cyl motors depending on the application.

I'm a big fan of forced induction, and am obsessed with turbo diesels.
 
Looks like a baby 5. Overall, not bad, looks better than the Chris Bangle cars. But....

Why, why, why... why must the headlights reach over and touch the grille. That ruins the front end completely.
 
I like the new styling but the 4-cyl makes me cry inside, turbo schmurbo.

And as others mentioned, 3-series still predominately a girls car...but I love driving my wifes E90 330i.

Give me an '01 540i M-sport with a six speed, class!
 
I like my old E46 2003.5 M3 with SMG...that was a blast to drive...but it would have random acts of electrical anomalies...and my doors would not open randomly from the inside. (BTW, on a date, it looks really bad when you are stuck inside your car...and have to roll down the window to reach outside and pull the outside handle...just to get out of your car!) :(

oh same here. Want one soooo bad but the prices on even the used ones are crazy. I'd probably end up in the 4 door as well, the coupe just looks so sexy. But yeah the diesel 3 series won car of the year and they pretty much said if you buy a non-M gasser 3 series you are stupid. That's how good they claim the car is. throw on a tune, exhaust, little appearance and it'd be sweet. sure you might look like a dbag. but it's a fantastically good car

I've heard the same thing about the diesel powered 3 series. They are torque monsters. Have yet to hear something bad about them. However, we were not available with x drive............... (correct me if I'm wrong someone). Then again, they are STILL great lease cars ;):

Yes your correct, the only configuration was: Sedan, Automatic, RWD. I could deal with the RWD if it was stick, but ideally the setup for me would be: Sedan/Wagon AWD Stick Diesel... But in this country thats a mere dream...
 
yeah i think it's 400 some odd lb/ft of torque.. Stock.
they're pretty peppy and knock down great mpg's stock.
however, tuning on a turbodiesel has much more potential than on most consumer vehicles. The timing, fuel maps, boost tables can all be optimized to provide a more powerful and more efficient vehicle depending on the settings.
I'd get one, ditch the dpf, and get the ECU flashed. that would be a fun car right there, i've heard the tuning really lights those twins up..
 
The side is so boring of that car, at least the back is nice and the front they changed a little bit. I don't like it though, I would never buy one of those, old or new.
 
To me, it looks like a mini 5 series. I am not a huge fan of this styling. I like the older 3 series better!
