I have been a Jeep guy for years (still have a 96 XJ that is heavily modded for rock crawling), but I just purchased a 1999 Toy 4Runner Limited for a great deal. It already has a 3" lift, and aftermarket front/rear bumpers. My plans for it is to make it our family wheeler, and a 3rd vehicle driver for my wife and I. My wife and kids love getting in the woods too (the XJ is only a two-seater), and this seems like a great platform to build from. It has 166,000 miles, and is very dirty, but it has no rust, and seems to have been well maintained by the previous owner. It needs a handful of work, but nothing major. It needs new internal CV boots on the front, and the hood scoop insert for the hood. I want to put a set of rock rails on it too, and a new set of tires. I am leaning towards 295-75-16's, but need to do more research to see if they will fit reasonably well with minor trimming.
I am excited to start working on this new (for me) platform!!! This is a great forum with lots of helpful info for Toy newbies like me!!
And yes, eventually it will get an SAS and become our primary wheeler (and be trailered)
