New 4 Runner Purchase

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums here.

I'm out in Missouri and I'm looking at getting a 1999 4x4 Limited with 120k miles, pretty stock after that.. It does have running boards and a tow package.

I don't really have any more information, I'm going to see the 4Runner tonight 10/3/08. I will take more pictures.. From what the person says has been done.. It's been garaged, well maintaned, non-smoker car.

Just wondering if the 99's are solid 4Runners, and I'm going to try to get it for 7K- 6.5k if the tires need replacing.

Think that sounds about right???

Yeah, if it's in good shape and if the maintenance has been done, that's about the right price. 99 Limiteds, IMO, are one of the best (if not the best) 4Runners made. It's got a multi-mode 4WD and an auto-climate control. Tires are about $700 for a good set, so factor that in.

Good luck on the buy. That one looks like its in great shape. Love those stock wheels, too.
 
Thanks pnut.. I'm glad to hear the '99's are a good year.. I saw that the '98's were just a step behind so I was happy to hear this one was a '99.
 
Don't know yet, going to look at it tonight for the first time.. Too much of a bother to get that person to take pics of it.

They did send me a blury pic, seamed good.. They say it's clean and a non-smoker car so .. we'll see..

I'm just hoping it doesn't have any issues inside..
 
The person said who was selling it that it had the tow bar in the back.. is that standard? or is there an actual tow package which she's referring to??

reason I ask is KellyBlueBook adds about 3k worth of value just for the tow package option..

10k with 7k without..
 
I'm not really sure what a tow bar is. Does she mean a hitch?

I don't think Toyota offered a tow package, but I could be wrong. I've never seen a 4runner with bigger side mirrors or other features which normally come with a tow package.
 
A tow hitch is nice to have. It can protect you from rear end collisions.

I don't know about it adding $3,000 in value though. I don't think that cost that much installed.
 
The tow package doesn't really add or subtract from the price and it's just a simple tow bar connected to the frame and can be bought to add to a 4Runner for less than a couple hundred.
 
Is there any way to tell or can you give me a link to tell if this would be the 4runner or highlander version.. I think one has larger coils..

Not sure though..

It's not a Highlander version. Highlander is basically a sport edition with a scooped hood and color matched bumpers. Even if you had a choice between the two trims, I'd still go for the Limited for the multi-mode 4WD. This system allows you to run 4WD on dry pavement (basically an AWD system), while the Highlander can only be run in dirt/snow or off-road.

In the interior, make sure the auto-climate control lights work. They tend to go out. Also, check to see if it has this button to the right of the steering wheel.

It's the rear locker, and most, if not all, Limiteds have this. Very useful if going off-road.

As far as coil springs go, the Highlander did not come with any different suspension set up than the other trims. Most of '99's and some '00's came with taller coils, in all trims.
 
I bought a 2000 identical to it last month, same color and all. Although it has a grill guard and tail light guards and 125K. I paid $6200. Still working out the kinks, but love it overall.
 
I'm out about 30min from STL, in St. Charles area.

The deal didn't work out..

The 4Runner had the tranny/radiator fluids mixed together issue.

Plus about $1500 more in repairs.. CV Boot, Tire Rod. etc..

So now I'm looking at..

1998 Limited 4x4
