New 4Runner & bike rack setup

I've had my 4runner for a few months now, but I finally took a few photos. I had the 4runner waxed today and then I installed some roof mounted bike trays. Here's the combo...

nice maverick......i don't see any suv's with a bike rack on the roof. they're usually hitch mounted racks. isn't it tough getting the bikes up there and down?

Thanks :) it's definitely nice weather in San Diego....makes for some good outdoor activities....ohhh, and plenty of good looking people! ;):

I decided to go with a roof mount for several reasons:

-I can still tow something
-I can get to the back very easily
-I don't have to take the hitch rack on and off
-I don't have to worry about anyone rear ending the bikes
-Less likely to have people touch the bikes if I make a quick pit stop
-I'm 6'4" and used to having heavy objects above my head (compete in olympic lifting) so it's no trouble for me to get the bikes on the roof

I realize that it's not the norm, but for me it's the best choice :D
 
Beautiful pics Mav, the lighting and warmth of the late afternoon sun really adds to it. Great setting, being by the water, active people in the background, a runner, vollyball net, a 4runner with mountain bikes on it. It really tells a story about this type of vehicle and the people who own them. Nice bike too, maverick w/ the new xtr, disks, invert fork. Most people dont realize and see the beauty of that bike. It alone cost about a fifth or sixth of that 4runner, or about $5000.

Thanks for the nice comments Pachuco! I definitely plan on using this vehicle for mtn. biking, camping, snowboarding, exploring, maybe towing etc. You're right about the Maverick...it's about
1/5th the price of the 4runner. There are some expensive parts you can't see in the pic....chris king rear hub, maverick front hub, easton carbon fiber bars, thompson post, wtb saddle etc.....it all adds up, but it is very fun and should provide years of pleasure, fitness, and health! :awais:
 
Man your ride looks good. Titanium is such a great color! And that is coming from someone who has black. Your pics make me want the sports rims and hood scoop really bad!
 
I like the silver.

You gotta keep in your mind how high up those bikes make you stick up, no going into parking garages for you. Or low hanging shrubbery over the road. Getting them up and down must be a pita! Which would be a good security feature though.

Why didn't you choose a hitch mounted bike carrier? It would save on gas (my Yak eats up 2-3 mpg when on).

Just curious.

Maybe your question is actually more like: "Did you consider gas and height clearances in your decision?"

BTW, I don't have a bike carrier, but I think I would do the same as Maverick and I am only 6 foot nothing and certainly not an olympic weight lifter.....or anything in the same ballpark!

removed rack

Just as an update...I decided to take the bike racks off my 4runner today. I didn't like the way they were angled out slightly (due to the shape of the stock crossbars). This caused the bikes to lean outward and just seemed less stable and a bit weird. I still had a yakima setup for our Acura TL so we put the setup on that car instead. Hopefully this info will help someone decide how to do their racks in the future.
