New 4Runner Member!!!

I just wanted to say thank you to EVERYONE on this sight. Your insight had guided me into getting my first SUV ever!!! I got the 2007 4Runner V6, SR5 with extras. I am SOOOO happy. I love it so much. I am still in the break-in period, but I can't wait till I can put it all to work.

I had to test out the 4WD today for 3 minutes or so because a road I was exploring passed over onto the beach and it was amazing!!

For break-in, I don't think there's a specific RPM you need to keep it under, other than avoiding heavy loads and hitting redline. I personally kept mine under 2k for the most part during the first 500 miles and under 2500 RPMs until 1000 miles. I ocassionally went to 3-3.5k after 500 miles. (I find the V6 having enough power and transmission shifting when needed that I rarely go above 3k.) The most important part is don't drive at any one given RPM and vary your engine speeds. It's pretty difficult to do on the freeway with traffic. I prefer city driving (to vary engine speeds) during the break-in period and plan your stops accordingly. You don't want to do hard stops either, until the brakes get a chance to break-in as well. Some may disagree with me on the above.

Break-in will vary between people. IMO, the manual has the best suggestions, though sometimes vague. There are some that claim hitting redline and full throttle is the best way to break-in an engine.
 
Thanks for the break-in advice. I just can't wait to get this baby off-road. Anyone know any good places in the Hudson Valley?
 
Some may disagree or all may disagree....

When I picked up my 4R I jumped on the hiway and was cruising to the tire store @ 65-70 mph to get my 265/70's put on.. Later that nite with a whopping 85 miles I was off road .

Runs like a champ ! Coming up on 20k miles in 11 months..... lovin it !!!

Don't know of too many places in the Hudson valley but I do in CT/MA- let me know if you are interested . . . .

The Owners Manual talks about Break-in in Section 2. It doesn't tell you you can't go over a certain RPM; it just says take it easy during the first 1000 miles. It also discourages towing in the first 500 miles.

Don't accelerate off the line like you're doing a hot rod time trial, and you'll be fine.
 
There are a few places up by me in the Hartford area, as well as a few in MA, less than an hour North of me. They are good for beginners, with minimal chance of damage. Let me know if you want to go sometime- we'd have to wait until Spring for most of them though, because they close most of them in CT until Spring and the one in MA involves water crossings with ice chunks that can (and have) take out fog lights, turn signals, dent bumpers, etc.
