It seemed like I had to replace the windshield on the FJ Cruiser every other year. At least one of the non-Toyota stamped windshields was noticeably distorted on the bottom. We'll see what my insurance agent says on Monday...

My 2016 TEP already needs new glass and was quoted 750.00 for the glass and new seals + 150.00 for the install by my local Yota dealer. Still debating wether or not to just go with Safelite at less than half the cost.
I'd want the glass that the others have on the lot. Look very close at the aftermarket windshield if installed sitting in the truck particularly at a angle and look for any wavy or distorted. Most aftermarket windshields have this.
Our 2013 Avalon needed new windshield and the safelite glass was $250, $1500 from the dealer for whatever oem glass they offered. The safelite has a tiny bit of wavy distortment but I'm not tripping because price and how often the windshield gets tagged with objects. Avalon sits loooow.

call me crazy, but this seems high...
i got nice clear (NON-OEM) glass, no distortions, installed for $220... it even came with the windshield wiper heater hookup.
had it installed now for about 2 months and it still looks great. My deductible with insurance would have been $500, that's why i opted to pay out of pocket. but still the $220 was way worth it and i've never looked back.
I choose not to mess with Texas....
I shopped around. Probably would have been around $200 cheaper if I bypassed the insurance company.
Next time, I'll drive to Texas to get my windshield replaced.

But I will say it was 260 for a pilkington and that's what I asked for and he didn't bring the one I asked for which he was embarassed about so I inspected this one and was in a bit of a time crunch and went with it. It's been way worth it.
FWIW, 2 weeks ago I spent a lot of time at a local glass shop. I got 3 windshields replaced on cars. Your statement on being cheaper w/o insurance is for sure accurate. I heard all their quotes over the phone, it was always far far cheaper out of pocket. Most I paid was $220 OTD.
Company is a franchise with random locations. Half the price safelite quoted, called "auto glass now".
Next time, I'll bypass the insurance company. I've never had a claim with them, and I didn't feel like paying this time. We'll see if they try to raise my rates because of the spendy glass.
ASAHI glass is a top notch glass maker in Japan. It's probably them that supplied the glass for Toyota.
OEM Toyota glass is around the same price with $60 for shipping.
