New 4Runner owner... Adding nav/backup camera?

So, I've always been an Audi fan... But - when I bought a boat... well - towing became an issue. So I picked up an 05 4Runner Sport the other day.

So far loving this car... One of my 'gripes' is there is no courtesy light over the dash - only the doors... It sure is dark in there at night!

Second, I'd like to add navigation, bluetooth, backup camera, ipod cable. I always have liked retaining the 'stock' look. But is the factory navigation any good? (I'm sure it's overpriced compared to aftermarket)

What would you guys recommend?

You could pay upwards of $2000 if you wanted the factory navigation from the dealership.

I too wanted navi in my runner but at that price, I felt I would have gotten better bang for my buck with something aftermarket and I went after this:

Pioneer AVIC-X940BT

It says that the MSPR is $1000, but you can find one on Ebay or Amazon for around 600 brand new, give or take.

They also have a backup camera that you can add on.

You can also get a steering wheel control interface so that you can retain the functionality of the buttons on your steering wheel. I believe PAC & Metra both make their own versions of this product.
 
You can get the stock look with a double din if you buy the factory surround. I installed a Kenwood DNX model and it looks great and does what you want. It also has Garmin GPS so map updates are easy.

i've done the OEM route and it's fairy easy. Just make sure you get the NAV unit for cheap. If you get it from the dealers, forget it, TOTALLY not worth it. Here are some links you can browse to see what you are up against. Not difficult

There are other threads regarding some details (radio bezel/LEDcolor change/etc), but this mod is essentially plug and play provided you have a JBL amp or not. If you do, this mod is 100% doable. If not, you need to get the correct NAV H/U.

OEM: later year NAV units (depending on which model you get), do come "pre-wired" to accept an AUX input jack, but that is something else you would have to install. Going aftermarket would be tons easier.

Off the top of my head, there is product from Scosche that is a plug and play kit that integrates the ipod onto the NAV's display, pricey, but very cool. Keeps it "factory looking".

I think you're right. aftermarket will be way easier. I just need to make sure I find something that will retain the steering controls.

Cookie, could you tell me if all head units have backup camera capability? I am looking to replace my 04 head unit (35241) with an 03(35240). I broke the screen on mine. If the plugs totally match on the earlier h/u, would I get backup camera capability?

I think there are newer models out there but I put in a Kenwood unit with Garmin GPS and am still happy. I tried to document the install thoroughly. Hopefully the newer Kenwood models address the sluggish iPod controls but overall, it is a pretty good system and has all of the features you might want.

No, early models that did not come with a backup camera simply do not have the internal hardware. Replacing the screen won't do an thing.

I DID come across this:

This product ADDs video capability to your non-camera equipped OEM NAV. It's not cheap, but then the alternative is even more expensive. Check it out!

Yikes. How hard would it be to put in a newer display? Mine has the dvd unit in cargo area. The newer ones are internal. Are there harnesses to make my wiring compatible?

Wiring harness: I don't think so. From what I understand, there is a 24pin connector in the back of the camera equipped NAVs that the non-camera NAVs do not have. You would have to get pinouts for both and make the appropriate connections. READ: Pain in the Ass

Display install: I've never done it, but it's a matter of taking out small screws and CAREFULLY unplugging a very delicate "ribbon cable" that connects the screen to the head unit. Damage this and it's all over.

If you want to keep the an OEM NAV, get a unit with an INTERNAL DVD drive (maps).

This should help you in deciding which unit to get. Again, only if you want a toyota NAV. I try to update the info when I get a hold of it. But the information is pretty accurate IMO.

Hmmm. So my display is 86120-35241, and the one I am looking at is 35240. From the photo I saw, connectors look the exact same. Could there be camera capability if units were made around same time?
Otherwise, I would like to switch to newer oem display but that would involve changing connectors on my vehicle. How tough would that be?

I don't know if either of them are camera compatible. Sounds as though they aren't. As far as "date of manufacture" (if I'm understanding you correctly), again, I don't know. Simple: if the NAV didn't come with a camera from the factory, than it's not wired (internal hardware) to do it. Best option is to purchase that item listed on amazon that gives the unit video capability.

Either way (getting a newer NAV and/or getting that product on Amazon), you will have to "fish" wire to the rear of the vehicle as your 4Runner isn't wired for it. Additional connections will have to be made for it (GPS/camera/voice) to function properly.

Keep in mind: Doesn't matter what NAV you have (OEM Toyota), it will be plug and play for audio (FM/AM/CD/whatever) function and retain your steering wheel functions.

connecting screen: ribbon cable is/should be the same, you shouldn't have a problem connecting it to your NAV.
 
I don't think I explained it right. My head unit is 86120-35241. I have external dvd in cargo area. I have factory installed camera as well as jbl amp and steering controls.
I cracked the display screen on it. Otherwise it works fine. I was looking at an 86120-35240 but he does not have factory camera, so from what you are saying, it would not work on mine.
Can I buy screen and ribbon cable? My display says 17010 at bottom right.
Otherwise, I would replace entire unit and would like to use a newer one if it is plug and play with everything that i have. Hope this makes sense now.
 
I am new this forum as I just bought my T4R this past week. Mine did not come with factory nav so I am looking at options as well. I would like to have bluetooth and the whole 9 yards

I have an E46 BMW M3 and that did not come with factory nav so I recently purchased a unit from AVIN USA. It looks like a factory headunit but runs Android. It is sweet. Can connect to iPod, bluetooth, bluetooth streaming, has multiple usb ports So i can connect thumb drives or hard drives. It also has a microSd card slot in the front. Since it runs android Jelly Bean, i can dowload any app from the play store. It also has the ability to add a reverse camera. All steering wheel Controls work too

The guy that owns AVIN was a big contributor to the M3 forums as he did custom UI interfaces and ROMs. He finally ended up starting his own company.

They have options for Toyotas but not sure if they have one for the 4Runner. They have a universal toyota option with same features but runs Android gingerbread

Its basically like running a tablet in your car. I am going to talk to Tommy (owner) and see if I can get more info
