New 4Runner owner - First Toyota

Generally speaking, you don't want to drive on dry pavement with (center locked) 4wd. The front wheels want to go faster than the rear but can't, which causes issues.


I don't know any details on the 5th gen, but in any case, you'll be able to shift between 2wd and 4wd on the fly. So no worries.

Hello everyone, I trust this post finds you all well. I come to the site with hat in hand asking for your help… I recently purchased a 1997 Toyota 4 Runner 4 cyl 2WD with 253K miles which is still running like a champ. It has had a complete brake rebuild and new A/C system installed.
My plan is to convert this vehicle into a “Redneck RV” and use it for a solo trip to Alaska. I have started that transformation by adding my own MACO paint job and am working on the sleeping platform and storage areas for the back. My questions are pretty much functional in nature but I have not been able to crack the nut… If I may?
1. The vehicle was sold to me with one key only. No key FOB was provided at all. It does have electric door locks and they function properly from the inside and when I insert the key into the door lock. Can anyone advise on how I can tell if it is equipped with remote open/close capability? I realize this is not a life or death item but it would be nice to have. :wtf:
2. In the same vein I noticed a security system siren mounted inside of the engine compartment on the driver’s side. I have not been able to locate the actual alarm sensor inside of the vehicle. My most recent Toyota had the alarm sensor/control unit mounted =under the driver’s seat. Unfortunately I do not see a control unit under the driver’s seat nor anywhere else in the vehicle. It does have the cheesy red LED light mount on the driver’s side dash. Any ideas on where the alarm control unit maybe mounted? :wtf:

I too live in Iowa and can honestly think of only two times this last winter that I put it into 4wd...and both of those times was when I would turn off the traction control and have some fun :) Seriously, I was disappointed I didn't get to use it more but the thing got around great in 2wd. I believe the manual stats on the fly shifting between 2wd and 4HI below 50mph or something like that.
 
Storm Runner - you by chance in the DSM area? I've seen another white 5th gen running around with a storm trooper sticker in the window...

hey thanks for the info. I pulled the trigger and bought a 16 sr5-p this past weekend. So far loving it! right now i'm looking into runningboards/nerf bars, thought about getting the nfab nerf bars but the rust factor scared me away

i'm assuming 2low is 25 mph and below, what's the range for 4hi?
