Greetings all! Finally stepped into the SUV/4Runner world. Got a 97 Limited w/ 160k miles. I intend to use it for towing snowmobiles and the odd load from Home Depot, and for a short commute to work. Being new to the whole 4x4/towing/off-roading/SUV thing, I have a few questions. When I got my Honda Prelude last year, the first thing I did was switch over to synthetic, put in iridium plugs, ceramic pads, a new fuel filter, and a reputable intake. More intense things followed later. Looking around on this forum, it seems there is all sorts of other stuff to consider.
Here are my basic questions, and not all may be maintenance-related.
1) What general maintenance things should I attend to first with the mileage of this vehicle? Plugs? Plug wires? Fuel filter? Deck plate mod? Air filter? MAF sensor? Synthetic oil - amsoil/mobil1/something else? Change trans fluid? What brand?
2) I heard ceramic pads are not good for towing - is this true? What pads are recommended?
3) Before I bought the 4Runner, my mechanic looked it over and said it would need front shocks sometime, and brake pads and sliders soon (you can feel them stick a little). What brand/model shocks are recommended? I intend to replace all four at once and be done with it.
Sorry if any of these questions seem stupid, but I feel a little out of my field of experience. Been driving small Honda/Acuras up until now. Any other things to watch for or check or worthwhile mods, I would greatly appreciate it! I love working on my vehicles, and more info = better as far as I'm concerned.
Cheers!
