New 4runner- thinking about dumping stock dunlops for BFG's

What should I do?

Most people would think I'm crazy, but I'm tempted to take off the stock dunlops on my 4runner, go for a set of BFG A/T KO's. I think with about a 1000 miles on them, I should be able to fetch a decent amount of money for them. I just hate the look of street tires on an SUV.

What do you guys think? Also, what size should I run- I don't want any rubbing or problems.

Can the speedo be programmed for the larger tires?

I could stick with stock size and go with a 1" spacer to level it out, or with a 2/1 lift and a size larger.

Correct me if i am wrong, but BFG AT KO does NOT come in stock size. And yes, you will have minor rub with 265/70/17.
 
what size wheel are you running the 16" or the 17"?
b/c thai is right for the 17" there is no stock size, however 16" does come in the same size as stock 265/70r16 thats what i'm running... see sig...

anyways if you have the money go for it!!!, if you are depending on the money for the dunlops to go for the BFG's then just wait till you wear out the dunlops...
 
Yeah, I have the 17's on the sport. I don't think 16's will clear the bigger brakes.

BFG T/A's are only in the taller 265/70, not 265/65. They're only an inch taller- with a 1" spacer, shouldn't I have enough room?

I just hate the look of the stock dunlops and the front end is too low. I'd like it a little more level. I think the rear is ok for ride height, so the 1" spacer should be better than a 2/1 for me.

I'm going to check the Toyo line too- that's nitto's higher end line. I had their open country M/T 37x13.5x17 on my F250 turbodiesel and they were awesome tires that lasted 30k miles.
 
My understanding is most 265/70/17's work with no spacers and no lift just a minor reposition of the front part of the fender liner. The BFG's are more square in shape and they will actually rub the UCA (upper control arm) if the wheel is cut all the way. I may be confusing the 285 size on the UCA rub, either way most don't seem to worry about it. Spaceman wrote up a good tire fit thread that was to a stock, non-lifted, non-spaced T4R. Search his username rather than a subject.

Get the 265/70-17 BFG's along with the spacer to raise you nose up for the leveled look and call it the day. I'm sure you'll be much happier with your 4R after just those two mods.

Thanks, that's what I'm going to do in the next few weeks. I'm coming from a 6" lift F250 on 37's, which my new wife couldn't stand. It was too big for her to drive and couldn't fit downtown at at the mall parking garages.

So I sold it it and picked up the 4runner. I just want it to look a little "beefy" and not like a grocery getter-but it can't looked "jacked up" or she'll kill me. So no 285's and a 3/2 lift. I don't think she'll even notice the 1" spacer in front. And there's no trails in the future for this runner- maybe some snow eventually, but for the next 3 years, I'm getting transferred to Hawaii. (I'm in the Navy).

Well I've been pouring over pictures of 4runners on the forum. I can't decide between the cornfed 1" front spacer or the 2/1 kit.

I plan to run the stock tires for awhile, then upgrade to 265/70R17 BFG A/T KO's.

If there's no real difference in tire rubbing/clearance between the two lifts- I'd rather just use the 1" front spacer. I don't need the ground clearance, just want the truck more level and to clear the bigger tires.

What do you guys think?
 
From what it sounds like what your 4R future holds, I would just get the 1" lift with slightly bigger tires. That'll fill the wheel wells up just nicely. Best way to think this out is to stand back like 10 feet from the side of it and just picture the nose a little higher with more proportionate tires in there. The rear sits high enough as it is, unless you don't mind the new wifey :bash:.
 
I would have to vote for the 1 inch spacer too based on your situation! Although a 2/1 with 265/70/17 looks bad ass IMO.

I am having the same delimma....2/1 kit, or 1/0 kit???

And like you, I plan to wear my CrossTerrains out, then replace them with 265/70R17 BFG ATs.

Is the 4R coming to Hawaii as well or will it just be you? The reason I ask, is there are some nice trails on Oahu that you might want to check out during some down time. Im sure if you do all the mods first and then bring the 4R to Hawaii will be cheaper because you are not paying shipping costs for parts.

Where will you be stationed Pearl Harbor or Kaneohe Marine Base?

4runner is coming out too. When I lived in Kailua 2000-2003 I had a cj7. Now I have the runner. Looking foward to getting back to the island.
 
I see....you have been here before. Welcome back. I am originally from Enchated Lakes.

I only wheel at Sandy's and Mokuleia side. But I have heard some good trails in Waiahole, Old Dump Road, Kahuku & Kaena point.

I recently installed BFG AT's on my non lifted sr5 2006 4x4. I have just a bit of rubbing at full lock...not any exterior plastic just the inner plastice fender wells. Not an issue for me. I've even put it through some rather serious, at least for a non lifted/modified vehicle, articulation and no problems. Love the tires. I had them on a 78 FJ40 and they lasted over 50miles
 
I posted this back in august. Since went with a full lift and bigger tires. Don't need anymore suggestions....
