New 5100s

At the recommendation of many people here I just had a full set of Bilstein 5100s installed and used the .85 ride height notch in the front. Stock tires and coils. Total automotive performance shipped them with blisteringly fast shipping. The 5100s are significantly better than the OEMs. I was afraid they’d be too stiff but they are not harsh at all. It’s hard to explain but body roll and front diving are nearly non-existent. I drive on a lot of rural FM roads which can be pretty rough and it seems that these 5100s soak up the pavement better than OEMs. Maybe the original shocks were just that wore out but it seems like I’m more isolated from the rough roads but with zero mushiness, excellent steering feedback, little more level than before, my mechanic even noticed how nice the ride is now. So thank you to all who have posted. I’m very pleased with the outcome.

the primary job of a shock absorber is to keep the tires in contact with the road. It's truly amazing what a good premium set will do for just about any vehicle. If you want the ride to be even more taut and controlled drop the fronts back down to the low setting and get a set of good springs in there too. However fair warning that can snowball pretty quick.

How many miles on your 4runner when you replaced the original shocks?

I am the second owner so I can’t say this with 100% confidence but 157k is what I have on the truck. Would not recommend waiting that long. They had obviously gone out a long time ago.
