Thanks for answering my question! I tried to do a cursory search of MPG/Efficiency and "Rack" or "Baja Rack" but there were too many threads to look through and I sort of gave up after the fifth or sixth thread. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone had completed the rack addition only and calculated efficiency changes from the addition of the rack.

I was hoping for a 1, 2 MPG hit at most =(. I'm too poor to afford the fuel premium for the rack installation if it's more of a hit than that.

I think the 1-2mpg hit is what it is. I drove from PHX to SAN to buy the rack. I put the cruise on 80mph for 10 miles going and coming. I avg'd btwn 17.2 and 16.9 coming back (with the rack) over 10 miles (in different spots) and 18.5 - 18.1 (in different spots) going out (without the rack). Wind, elevation, grade, etc. play into this factor, so it is a "rough" guess. The faster you drive, the bigger diff you will notice, as drag from wind resistance becomes exponentially greater. You will not notice a difference city driving. I am going to remove the wind deflection plate and see if there is an increase in MPG.

FWIW, I NEVER was able to obtain over 19mpg at any speed over 70mph...even when it was totally stock...

How about downhill with a tailwind :)

Oh, you live in SC, you have no mountains, hills, or anything that could remotely be construed as having any sort of "grade"

To keep this on topic, the bottom line is that the Baja Rack is gonna reduce your MPGs a small amount especially at highway speeds. Flat, uphill, downhill, tailwind, headwind, no wind. Yup, flat as a pancake here, but the Blue Ridge Mountains are only a hop skip 'n a jump away.

BAM we had 96" crossbars

1) Nice Rack! ;)

2) Getting close to needing a 'Oversized/Wide Load' permit!

3) Ouch, dare I ask how the front of the 4R did with the ropes/lines coming down on the hood and bumper area? I've seen people try to use straps and they take the paint right off on a longer road trip.

1. Thanks!
2. Yeah, but we only had to go on main roads for about a mile, and the rest were sand/dirt forest service-type roads with almost zero traffic. If I were taking this on the highway, I would purchase and use 78" Thule crossbars...I just didn't have them on that trip...still could have fit all that on the 78s.
3. I was worried about that too, but I use cotton/nylon hybrid rope, and tie it down pretty tight, so there is not any whipping even at high speeds. Also, I have the AVS bug deflector which takes most of the pressure of the ropes. I used to do this all the time with my old car and never had problems either. I do think if you used 100% nylon ropes, or thicker ropes with braids that are not at tight, then you might have a problem. With this setup, the ropes do hit the front bumper, but no issues so far, and I have done it twice, and both times I traveled over 200 miles on highways each way. I don't ties them down when it is just kayaks, but with a canoe, I feel the need to do this.

On Sunday i looked at the Baja rack on their website and it was $625 and today i say they bumped it up to $825. What gives? Did i see the original price wrong? How much were most of yall paying?

Fyi-

I just wanted to pass along some information regarding the Baja rack that I know quite a few of you on here are running with. I called them a couple of days ago to see if the light bar that they currently offer (7") is the shortest that they have. I want to do a light bar but I don't have any room left to go taller or I won't fit in the garage. They said for that exact reason they are working on a light bar to fit the Baja Rack that will remain the same height as the rest of the rack. Should be done soon.

I first read this and thought they had the new full length ones for the 5ths up on the website ,as that's about what they'll cost! Nope.....You must have mistakenly been on a different vehicle as I didn't see it.

I e-mailed Sergio at BajaRack about the release of the new flat utility racks yesterday and his reply today was.... "The brackets are being welded this week, I will send you pictures today to discuss the final details."

Here's the other roof rack thread
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/78442-baja-rack-vs-gobi-stealth-rack.htmlthread with more details...

have any of you put the light bar on the front of the rack yet? any pics that i may have missed? looking to possibly add one on mine

Any updates on those who have the Baja and installed surf/snow racks? I saw a few of you were looking to figure out ways to place Yakima/Thule Crossbars/racks w/o adding alot of height by using the Yakima/Thule Towers. The U-bolt idea was good but seeing if anyone came up with any other options.

Matt,

I put pics up in the show us your rack thread on the general tab. I was able to put the Yakima attachments right onto the rack for our kayaks. It is a great solution, keeps the height down and also it is much easier to load and unload. I usually put the skis in the back but I was thinking this weekend that if I need to I will just put the skis into a ski bag and strap them right onto the rack.

Awesome, thanks! I didnt even know about that thread.

No worries! Just a couple of things to note. The smaller bars that are across the top sit a bit higher than the main round bars. This interfered a bit with the roller and saddle mounts causing them to be slightly out of level. Still works and looks fine, they just have a slight cant to them. The bars are also a bit thinner than they Yakima bars so I put a bit of rubber gasket material under the mounts and they fit fine.

I do love the rack setup. It is so easy to strap things down on it.

Anyone know if they are at the shop on Saturday? They don't list days and hours on their website.

In a pinch, and need a rack.

Looking to pull the trigger this week on this Baja rack. Anyone install the Gobi ladder with this rack? Is it possible with enough clearance when the trunk is open? Spoke to the Baja phone attendant, she said yes, but not 100% certain she completely comprehended what I was talking about. Any picks of this install would be great! :thanks:
P.S. First post :hello:, if this has been ask, sorry. Please be gentle...

Search my threads, one is Gobi Mount not so good or something to that effect. Thats the one you want. Oh, and the offroad thread for pics :bigok:

Is the rack below compatible with my 2014 4Runner trail edition without any sort of modifications or drilling? I do not order products that need pre-install mods to fit the vehicle. It need to dropp right in. I have zero skills for any sort of custumizations. Zero for sure. I love the one below. Thanks in advance. Newt.
