New 5th Gen Owner Thread

Many of you have already made suggestions on updates and improvements to our "stickied" threads and there are some good ideas!

One of the biggest challenges for brand new 5th Gen 4Runner owners is finding stuff here.

1. What are your thoughts on creating a thread (it will be stickied) that addresses "New Owner" stuff? It could include:
A. T4R forum rules
B. Instructions on how to effectively search
C. Other links to threads that new owners usually want to read first like oil changes, bigger tires, etc.

With that said I don't think we want a full page of stickys at the top so some of them would need to be "recycled" into something new. I propose taking the current "How To Search" sticky and converting it into a "Welcome New Owner" sticky with instructions on searching + links to info new owners usually want to know. Yes, we all know most people don't look at sticky threads but at least this will give everyone a thread to link to when new owners ask questions! Thoughts?

You might want to broaden that out to "Welcome researchers and new owners" because I spent quite a lot of time on here researching before my purchase... I started an observer, but now I can hopefully contribute!

Definitely heading in the right direction though 1engineer

Does everyone agree that the easiest way to search is to google it with a prefix of "5th gen" before the search term? If so then I will be replacing the "way to search" sticky with the "New Owner Introduction" sticky. Thoughts?

Great idea! My only thought is to make sure that the first few pages are well written information dense posts. If we just leave it to each member to contribute and discuss it will turn into 700+ pages of people chatting which will be very hard to navigate.

I like the alternate search, I would at least keep the info in the thread and just add to it.
If you want to consolidate stickies, you can probably add the lifted pics, pic gallery and build threads into the mod etc thread. I agree though, the easier and quicker things are for us to get to, the more likely we will be to actually post the link for someone who didn't see the stickies. Or at least tell them what sticky to find it in. I like the 2nd gen Tacoma Tips mods and more format. It was always easy to find stuff there.

I like that too but you guys are going to have to come up with additional threads you would like included, in addition to the existing FAQ's. What I think we need and what most of you think we need are probably quite different. If you guys come up with a thread link, AND it makes sense, I will happily add it.

I usually preface with "5th gen 4runner". Omitting "4Runner" may return the same results.

Alternately, assuming no one here is vested in ad revenue, just prefacing with "4runner" and omitting "5th gen" will also grab useful info from various other forums. This one is the biggest and best (IMHO), but it isn't the only one.

You are correct. I forgot to add the 4Runner in quotes. -mod-

All great ideas ... would add a build thread index (which you seem to be doing). But the basics about tires, oil changes, alternative fluids to factory - those are (IMHO) the typical changes many, many owners are directly interested in and come to forums to research, and get information other than what they get from the dealer.

You could just a add a permanent link, such as:
Google Search T4R 5th Gen Forum
Then one just needs to replace the word "SEARCH" with desired search terms .

I did not write this...

Couldn't hurt... I've been able to use google to find most of what I need, but I enjoy hunting and reading, so maybe not the right person to ask!?

All Sounds good to me. When I first came to the forum my first instinct was to just ask a question in a new thread. Luckily for me I read all the stickys first and figured out to search first. I did not know to search for 5th gen though so little things like that will help us noobies out a lot.

FWIW, I think the 3rd gen buyers guide is a fantastic model in terms of something that educates new or prospective owners. It was ridiculously helpful for me. I know there are several useful stickies at the top of this forum (some of which are lists or organized links), but having an actual document of sorts may cut down on sill question threads for those who are lazy/bad at searching. Obviously this represents a ton of work...

New Owners Search thread

It sounds good in theory Greg. The end results depend on the implementation of your new thread ideas.

I think the current title, "Alternate Search.." is useful for anyone trying to find out how to search for topics in the forum. It helped me. I think the thread should have the word "Search" in it.

Not sure if this is the right place, but I have a suggestion. I recently joined Tacoma World and immediately upon creating an account, I received an email with everything I needed to know, including to search before you post! It also gave several tips and tricks as well as places to look for certain things. After reading what you've been trying to do on here, that might be a good place to start. The email was auto-generated.
