"new" 89 runner, got a few questions

i just bought an 89 4-cyl 5-speed 4runner with 108,000 miles on it. it's in dang good condition for being 15 years old, but being that old, you gotta expect some things to go wrong. and i can't think of any better way to get help on a few things than by asking you guys.

1. it's a stick shift, so it NEEDS an e-brake. 1st the cable is broke. not a problem, easy fix. however, the "bells" and "horns" are froze up. ("bells" and "horns" are the term that the local toyota dealership used). what they are is the little lever thingy that the cable attaches to. when the e-brake is pulled, the lever/hinge thingy does it's thing and engages the rear brakes in the drum. anyone ever had to change these? how hard was it?
2. exhaust. the exhaust isn't HORRIBLE, but it needs a new one soon. i'm HOPING that because of the combonation of a bad exhaust and bigger tires (31x10.5 AT BFG's)(at least i THINK those are bigger tires than stock. anyone know about that?), that contributes quite a bit to it being really slow. i don't know a lot about exhaust systems, but i know there needs to be back pressure vs breathability, etc. now, i certainly don't need it to keep up with my celica, but it'd be nice to get up to top speed on the freeway in under a minute, ya know? so, until i can afford either a much bigger enginer or a turbo kit, my 2.4L 4-cyl, 5-speed will have to do. so, what exhaust should i get to maximize my power? any suggestions? also, any other CHEAP things i could do to increase power?
3. i can hear my timing chain starting to click. meaning, i'm gonna have to do it sometime soon. i can get the kit for like $160. anyone does the chain themselves on this engine? how long did it take? easy/hard? any suggestions to make it easier?
4. can someone give me a rundown of ALL the engines, displacements, name badges, etc. that i can get in my truck? for example, i have the 2.4L. not a clue what the name badge is. i know there is a 2.7, 3.0, 3.4, and 3.7. at least i think. am i correct and what are their names? (also, i WANT to get a toyota v-8 in my 4r, but it'll probably be too expensive, not to mention too new so it might be hard to find, so i was thinking of a chevy 350 and all the goodies. but like i said, i'd PREFER a TOYOTA since that's what it is. anyone know any info on the toy v-8?)

that's all i got for now, i'm sure i'll think of more!

Are you sure you can,t get those {bells and horns } freed up and working with a little WD 40,might save you some time and money?

that's the 1st question that i asked my parts guy. he said that basically, once they go, they're gone. yes, i COULD probably break them loose, take them apart, and wire brush the hell out of them, coat them with wd-40 and put them back in, but he said they'd rust even quicker than before and i'd have to do it quite frequently. (i'm gonna see if i'm lucky and can find some in a junk yard that are in decent shape). however, right now they're locked up in the DISengage position. if they lock up in the ENGAGE position, then i have a problem, ya know? so i think i might just do it the right way, and shop around for the cheapest parts.

your engine is the 22R should say that under the hood.

It;s a 4cyl. in a truck so you know it's not going to keep up with your Celica.

look at it this way your Celica would not keep up with your truck in the mud. right?.

The tires will contribute to the truck running slower but most likely not the exhaust unless your cat is blocked.

Can Toyota order the parts you need?
Otherwise hit the salvage yards. They are a great place to get little parts for your older Toy.

other than the Chevy small block the Toyota 3.4L swap is more comman.

Oh yes you have allot of nerve, you got this great 1st Gen. 4Runner and..........
:worthless
You knew this was coming right?:D

haha, oh yes, i knew it was coming. i'm actually surprised it took that long since i've had it for like 2 weeks and have been making posts about just getting it! haha. i will do my best to take some today. i'm running out of time before my next class starts and i'm in class till basically 6:00, and it might be too dark by then. HOWEVER, TOMORROW i don't have class till after 1:00, so i'll have plenty of time to take some then!

i'm running really late today so this one picture will have to do for now! i WILL get more soon!

the problem with that is that finding a toyota in a junk yard that hasn't been in a SEVERE accident is pretty hard to do. at least in michigan. plus, the demand for them is so high up here that any part that IS available is snatched up on the spot. for example, if a 1st gen 4runner like my own was hit pretty hard on the rear or side or something and totalled out by insurance and the owner just let it die and sent it to a junkyard, people around here would pay whatever the junkyard would accept for it and tow the entire remains back home for their own personal parts car. it's sad, because whenever i go out west (colorado) or down south i see beautiful toyota trucks EVERYWHERE. the supply up here just isn't that way. people around here (because of detroit) are very ignorant, stubborn, and loyal when it comes to foreign cars so there aren't a lot up here in comparison to other parts of the country.

I agree with your statement to a point... I dont believe im ingnant :D I know Im stubborn:p and I am starting to become very loyal to my Toyota... not because I dont like fords or chevys or dodges or what not, but because all my friends have them and if I cant fix it than they can and(like you said) they probably have a trashed out yota I can get my parts from.
As far as the foreign thing goes.. if ford made a truck that didnt break and when it did it was relatively easy to fix, than I wouldnt have to go foreign..... gosh this post is getting long i guess i better stop

AMEN! if chevy's were 1/2 as reliable as toyota's i'd go with one of those to keep it in america.

As far as I'm concerned, not knowing about the newer SUVs, back then: 80's, 90's every other SUV on the road was a 4Runner wannabe and somehow none of them quite got it right!

Yeah, 31's are way over stock size on 1st generations. When I bought mine it had 30's on it and those slowed it up quite a bit. Stock size in inches is close to 28.5's - atleast up to 85, might have changed going to IFS, but not sure. You can get cold air, header, etc... to pump it up a small bit.

The exhaust balance between back pressure, and breathability, the research I did, 2 1/4 inch from cat - back for a 4cyl is the happy median.
any bigger and you don't have enough back pressure. Easiest solution is to regear.

Running 35x12.5's with 5.29 gears, and 190k on the stock engine, (before I blew it), my 4runner was quicker than the stock sized runners, and racing a friend on the beach in his stock 89 wrangler, I would be about a car length ahead of him by the time we hit 40mph.

You'd have to do some research but if you plan on staying with your 31's, 4.56's or their about might be good, I believe you have 4.10's like I did, if not should be pretty close.

Unbolt them from the backing plate, free them up, reinstall. I've done it and it works.

2. exhaust. the exhaust isn't HORRIBLE, but it needs a new one soon. i'm HOPING that because of the combonation of a bad exhaust and bigger tires (31x10.5 AT BFG's)(at least i THINK those are bigger tires than stock. anyone know about that?),

There was a factory 31" tire package available. There is a plate on the drivers side door jamb that tells the stock size and inflation pressure, check it.

so, what exhaust should i get to maximize my power? any suggestions? also, any other CHEAP things i could do to increase power?

a 1 /34 or so low restriction cat conv and muffler will help, along with a header.

regear to compensate for the taller tires.

3. i can hear my timing chain starting to click. meaning, i'm gonna have to do it sometime soon. i can get the kit for like $160. anyone does the chain themselves on this engine? how long did it take? easy/hard? any suggestions to make it easier?

it's fairly easy if you take your time and have a good set of directions. a FSM is a good place to start.
