hey all, i bought a 93 4runner yesterday, and i took it for a road trip today. i'm worried about a couple things. its the v6 engine and it seems to make a ticking sound. the faster i'm going, the faster the clicking sound. I've had a 4x4 with the 22-RE and it didn't make that sound, but i don't know much about these V6s, does anyone know if this is normal? Also, the engine gets hot real quick. is this normal? I mean, the heater is blazing hot after a block of driving, but the gauge says normal. Am i just freaking out about my new purchase?

these motors should not be making loud ticking noises. but its hard to say if what you are hearing is normal or not. first of all does the noise get faster if you rev the motor while parked, or does it happen only when you're moving. the more info you get us the better our suggestions will be. when does the noise occur, try to pin point where the noise is coming from. also check your fluids, especialy your engine oil level and coolant. these motors are know for blowing headgaskets.

i remember being surprised by the loud ticking noise that my '93 made to the extent that i brought it to the dealer. they said that the noise was coming from the injectors and that it was perfectly normal - hopefully this is the same for you. once i was assured that it was normal, the noise stopped bothering me.

as to the engine heating up . . . as long as your guage looks o.k., i would not worry about it. from what i remember, the 3.0 warmed up fast and took forever to cool down.

you shouldnt hear injector tick over the road...most likely your valve train..if your a mech check your valve clearances..toyota will charge you an arm and a leg to shim them..but a few loose valve wont hurt anything really..if the noise doesnt drive you nuts...
the heater work very well in them also

I would start with looking at (or replacing) the speedometer cable. They sometimes get noisy with age on that vintage of truck/4Runner and that would explain why it increases with speed :)

The 3.0L does tick loud and it is the injectors but if you can hear loud ticking going faster driving it could be your valves, bad lifter..etc.
How many miles you got?

The 4Runner does warm up very quick BTW thats a good thing if you live in the north:D

Sounds like you just might be over reacting a little
