New 95runner owner and need info.

I just bought a 95 sr5 runner 4x4 off craigslist for 1500. It has 279,000 miles on it &nd still running strong...body is in great shape too! But one problem it is having is the a/t tranny is slipping a bit in reverse and first in the mornings before it gets warmed up. Seems to be ok after a bit of driving . Anybody had this problem with theirs? I think it may have a small tranny leak from the pan but I got under it found that the speedometer cable that goes to the tranny was barely screwed on and think thats where it was coming from. I plan on rebuilding the vehicle into a trail rig but really dont know where to begin. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance and i'll post pics and mods as I go.

If your transmission ran low that could cause it to slip. I would pull the pan and see if there is metal in it. If not clean the filter fill her back up and run it.
 
Thanks man, i'll go that route first then. I plan on putting a new tranny and engine eventually but figure I should try and get the most out of what I got first. Im pretty impressed with how clean the motor is for the mileage it has. Has plenty of power too! I'll let you know how it works after the flush. Thanks again
 
$1500 for a vehicle that is almost 17 years old, has almost 300,000 miles , gets poor gas mileage and has a engine that lacks in the power dept ?

Wow....

With that kind of mileage, I sure hope the former owner has already replaced :

water pump , starter, timing belt, head gasket , etc....

If he hasnt, then I have a bad feeling you will soon be sinking alot of money into your new toy. Add to that, the reality that your transmission isnt working properly, and I am gonna guess you are gonna be having alot of mechanical headaches in the near future.

IMHO, you payed to much for it...and I seriously doubt you will be able to sell it at a later date , for more then $ 1100.
 
Yeah I realize 1500 was a few hundred more then I should have paid but every other 4x4 runner I tried to buy they either wanted too much or was gone by the time I called about it. Bluebook for that mileage in fair condish is 3400. And for the way the engine fires rite up and as smooth as it runs...not a bad buy really. I plan on replacing everything including motor and trans along with the little stuff. I have a 350z thats paid for as well as this so with no car payments i'll have plenty of scratch to do so. I look foward to the building up of this rig...its the reason I bought it! I like this years body style and it is in good shape for the age. So no worries here
 
Another question...buying tires and craiger rims this week, what size rim should I go with and could I fit 33's without a lift? What do most of you run? And should I do the lift next or start replacing the small stuff first (starter,fuel pump,water pump, ect..ect)?

I am running 15x8 Crager soft 8's with 32x11.5r15 BFG KM2s without rubbing, but it's close. I wouldn't go any bigger until it's lifted.
 
Thanks for the info. I was checking out your build and its looking good. Is there a reason a lot of people go with the 15x8's instead of the 15x10.50's?
 
Nevermind, I just realized I have 15x7's on mine and was looking at he tire size. Still a noob to all this but its why im getting into a build. Thanks again man.

I went with the 15x8 sense i didn't want my tire sticking to far out of the wheel well. Later down the road i will be getting 15x10.

Update...found out I gotta oil pan leak, trans pan leak and rear diff leak. In the process of fixing now. Hopefully thatll fix my problems for a while. Long enough for me to get my tires and rims, lift and change some other componets. I'll pit up a price list on my build soon along with pics.
 
Hey thanks for the advice 4runner kid, tranny problem fixed with the flush, clean and reseal. Got all my leaks fixed and now can start focusing on upgrades.:lookout:
