New 99 Limited Owner in IL

Hi all,

Been lurking around this forum for a while doing some research while looking at new vehicles. Finally bought a 99 Limited 4wd w/rear diff lock with just barely under 100k miles and I figured I'd introduce myself. This is a big upgrade comfort-wise from my 97 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 5-spd (but not nearly as fun to drive:naughty and I'm looking forward to owning it for years and many miles to come.


On my list right now are the deckplate mod, running board removal, and LED interior lights. Just put in new headlight and foglight bulbs today.


Also, could someone explain the 4wd system to me? If I understand correctly, the push button 4wdhi does not lock the center diff, but manually shifting it into 4wdhi does lock the center diff. Thus, I can drive on dry pavement using the pushbutton, but not if i physically shift the 4wd knob. Is this right?

Hey, congrats on the find! I recently purchased a 99 limited 4x4 with just under 100k too, and am loving it so far. Definitely more comfort than my 98 Accord, but not quite as fun to drive... in inclimate weather or when hauling my dog with friends though, I'm sure it will be.

Please keep me posted on your LED swap. I plan on doing the same, as I am not a fan of the green and it doesn't match my Pioneer head unit.

Regarding the 4x4, I think you are right with what you are saying. Pushing the button doesn't lock the center or rear diffs, pulling the shifter down locks the center diff (either 4Hi or 4Lo) and pushing the button to the left of the steering wheel locks the rear diff. I plan on only using 4Hi unlocked when driving at highway speeds, and only locking the diffs and using 4Lo if I'm stuck or pulling something (or someone...).

Oh, also, I'm in Illinois. Right off rt. 59 between Aurora and Naperville. Where are you located? Want to cruise sometime?

What size headunit is your Pioneer? Double or single DIN? I'm looking to put in a new radio and a subwoofer as well.


I'm in Lake Forest, though I'll be working in a wildlife refuge in NW Colorado for the next few months, and I'm trying to get this car ready for the big drive out there in just a couple of weeks. I sure wouldn't mind some snow to test out the 4wd before I leave though.
