New brake job, lower MPG?

Are there any wrenches out there who can explain how a rear brake pad change could possibly negatively impact MPG? No burning smell beyond the initial day. Assumed it was new pads (OEM). No squealing or squeaking. I've lost about 1.5 MPG. No other changes.

My guess is that it's your parking brake shoes....when everything was put back together, they weren't adjusted correctly.

I’d do what was already recommended. Jack the truck up and make sure the wheels spin freely. The parking brake shoes are likely too tight, creating drag on the rear rotors, hence the lower MPG

A rear brake job for a 2016 4Runner!?!? The rear brakes should last over 2x longer than the front.
 
I have a 2016...my brakes need to be done very soon. 25000 kms. I go through brakes on my cars and trucks very fast. Even my mechanic is surprised.

Im sure OP drives like a maniac like myself or has high mileage. Sometimes i think my 4runner is a porsche.
 
did someone just tell you they needed to be done, or did you actually inspect the pad thickness? because the factory pads should last longer than that even with spirited driving.
 
Thanks guys for the diagnosis. I hope that the parking brakes is the issue, sounds like it could be a quick fix. I'm taking it back to the mechanic today to further inspection.

Sorry, I failed to mention I have 28K on the Runner right now. Last Toyota Care service they told me I was due. Front brakes apparently still good.

One more vote for parking brake. At 28K no calipers should be very gummed up and I would expect they were inspected and all contact points lubed during the brake job.

I have a similar issue,
2016 50,000 miles. The rear brakes where worse then the front, think it had to do with the traction control kicking in with the crappy stock tires.
The new pads are producing a ton of brake dust and a squeal at the very end of stopping. The squeal started a week after I installed them.

its like the service guy that asked my wife if she needed a rotation w/o taking tire tread measurements

At the mechanic right now. I relayed what you fine gents proposed could be the issue... That being the parking brakes. He responses with, "that could be but I've never heard of that happening before." We'll see what they find.

I didn’t want to mention the obvious...the rears should last twice as long as the fronts. I was merely offering my mechanical advice.

But...he never heard of this before?!? I wrench on all of my family and most of my friend’s vehicles. I’ve had to adjust this no less than 3 times. The parking brake issue is far from unheard of.

Be careful friend. It sounds like you’re getting hosed. No way in hell should you need new rear pads so soon. Something else is amiss here.

With all due respect, in many newer vehicles it is quite common to have the rears go way before the fronts. This is because the traction control is using the rear brakes to modulate torque. I can speak to it being a common issue in many manufacturers of rear wheel drive cars. And it's not really an issue, it's just the nature of the Beast. In the old days yes the rears always lasted twice as long because the fronts did most of the braking. But now the rears are modulating the torque in the rear in addition to braking.

This should not be the case though if you drive like grandma and traction control never kicks in.

My GLI is rear brake biased. I replaced my rear brakes at 95000 miles for the first time, front ones are still at 50%. If these brakes are lasting less than 25k don’t buy oem pads.
