'18 4Runner front brakes squeaking after brake job

Hi everyone, first let me start by saying I've done dozens of brake jobs and I've had a couple where they squeaked a bit afterwards, but never like this. Usually the resolution has been to lubricate the moving parts and a thorough cleaning of the caliper, but not in this case.

At about 48K my brakes were getting a little thin, so I replaced the front and rears (no rotors) with a quality set from autozone that others had recommended. No issues at all for the first couple weeks, then after the vehicle sits for a period it will make a terrible screeching sound when the brakes are initially applied. I've removed them at least twice now, checked the calipers, pins etc but the result is the same, they still screech. The good news is that it doesn't do it while I'm driving around. I really don't want to replace a brand new set of pads, but I'm not sure what else to do, other than live with it. Maybe the pads themselves are defective. Guess maybe I should have just gone with the factory ones instead.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Shim Kit will likely fix this. I had a similar issue with Toyota oem pads when installed without shims.

Interesting. I seem to recall the factory pads had a metal back that pulled away when I removed them. The current pads I have, have the same thing.

From your description it sounds like this only happens after sitting for awhile. Could it just be a little surface rust build up on the rotors?

Did you do proper bed in? Since you switched to different pads they are a different friction material and that material needs a nice layer transferred over to the rotors that still have the previous friction material.

Another thought, more aggressive friction material will squeal when cold. Essentially its ideal operating range is a higher temp and they don’t like being cold. My Mustang was like this.

Thanks. We're not talking about it even sitting over night, it can sit for a few hours and still do it.

Followed the bed in procedures and like I said they didn't do it for a few weeks.

Good call on the friction material. I bought a premium brand of pad but they weren't a high performance style by any means.

Tried that, twice and I even spent the $ on the good permatex stuff.

Should use OEM Pads with OEM shim kit. You might get OEM shims to fit on those pads you have.

Curious if the pads were semi metallic? Just been watching video on Vikings Garage on youtube for a brake bleeding video and he mentioned how pads with any metal ie semi metallic in the pad material will cause this. Anyway probably not but saw your post and thought to mention it.
