Need to replace the brakes and rotors on my 2003 4runner ltd, and was thinkin of Brembo or EBC. What are you guys using or do you suggest? :beer:

OEM for me. I've tried just about everyting out there, except the real exotic stuff, and the OEM seems to have the least problems.

I tried to order some Brembos for the 265/65/17 wheel and it has been 8 weeks now on back order, from Tirerack.

Toyota wants too much for the rotors. But I like the OEM pads.
 
Which Brembo rotors are you looking at getting for your T4R? I tow a 20ft bassboat in the summer and a double sled trailer in the winter so I was maybe thinking of upgrading, but I probably don't need to. So probably stick with the OEM pads? Thank :cheers:

I feel your pain...I ordered my Brembo rotors from Tire rack in July, and i was put on the 6-8 week waiting list. But at least i should get mine before you:lmao:
 
Tirerack screwed me too w Brembo rotors!

I started to feel some shimmy when braking and a softer pedal so I figured that my rotors were warped. At the same time my Dunflops were getting really worn and I'm sure the balance was way off. (Had the 60-70 mph wobble too.)

Yeah, so after reading up on brake pad and rotor combos I decided that Brembo blanks and OEM pads were the way to go. The Brembos I am sure are better than OEM and less than half the cost. However they are hard to find. There was one place online that had them for $100 each, but Tirerack had them much cheaper and on back order. The rep I spoke with said that they might get the rotors in sooner than they list, but to "be on the safe side" they told me a later date (a week later!). Since I knew I still had some pad left I figured I'd order them and just wait. So I got the OEM pads from Partznet in like 2 days. I ordered the rotors on June 12 and the "estimated availability" was July 12th, then it changed to July 30th (on like July 10th)! I called them and asked what was up with that. They said they
were just on back order and they could give me a refund if I wanted. I said no because I want those rotors. Now the availablity is October 1!!!

In the meantime I had some Revos mounted and the brakes felt much better (shimmy-wise) so the tire balance/crappy Dunlops were contributing to the brake shimmy. I could still feel it a little so I still felt good about placing an order for the Brembos.
I ended up buying some cheap Autozone pads and slapping them on there to last me until October. (I want to use the OEM pads with brand new rotors). First thing I noticed was that one caliper piston on each side wasn't extended as far as the others. They were not frozen as I was able to press them back into the caliper using a c-clamp. After reading about frozen caliper pistons and seeing a picture of the uneven pad wear I looked at my old ones. They were wearing unevenly, but not too bad! I am hoping that mine don't freeze up! I figure that I was only applying pressure to the pads using 3 out of 4 pistons which could be the cause of the softer pedal/less braking torque.
Next thing I noticed after a week of driving with them was that they started sqealing when I first braked but went away if I braked harder. I think I may not have used enough grease on the shims/pads/pistons. I'm living with it for now until my Brembos come in and I do them over again. Second thing I noticed was that there is much more brake dust accumulating on my front rims! Damn cheap pads! I can't wait to get the OEMs back on there.

So there's my rant. I will have an update if I ever get the Brembos!

Which Brmbo rotors did yu order?
 
I ordered front and rears for the 17inch wheels cuz I have the Sport Ed. Part# 25858 (front), Part# 25676 (rear, based on another thread I think this is right).

The rears are not even showing an availability date on the Tirerack website so I figure I'll cancel those. I just kind of wanted new brakes all around. (I also noticed some marks on my rear rotors which I'm not sure how they got there.) If anyone needs some Toyota rear brake pads let me know and maybe we can make a deal.
 
Try searching for brembos at other auto part stores. I ordered them for the front on my 2001 (different model and in stock) but I played around and found, IIRC, both NAPA and AutoZone could have ordered them for me also.
 
I looked around on the internet for them but couldn't find them anywhere. There are plenty of them out there for earlier generations and other vehicles, and I bet there are some for the 4th gens that don't have the 17inch wheels. The only parts store I checked with was AutoZone and they said they couldn't order them. I will be very happy to finally get them. The brakes don't feel too bad, but there is definitely some vibration/shudder.

One thing I was thinking: Since I saw that one caliper piston on each caliper wasn't as far out as the others, this could be a cause of premature rotor warping due to the uneven forces between the sides (2 pistons vs. 1). Anyone think this could be the case?

I've heard that some people have rebuilt their calipers, but I'm not sure on what years and models. I remember reading someone say that they didn't think you could rebuild the 4th gens. Has anyone rebuilt a 4th gen caliper (especially Sport Ed.)?
 
I bought re-built calipers from Rockauto for around $ 110/ea.

And yes if one piston is set back further then the rest it could mean that it will not advance any further and this will absolutely cause vibrations. A quick check would be to measure the pad thickness across the pad to see if it wearing a wedge pattern/shape.
 
Availability bumped yet again!!! F**K Brembo

OK, now I understand that things don't always go on schedule but this is absurd! Here's how the "estimated availability" (based on TireRack's website) has changed (I ordered them on June 12): July 12...July 30...October 1...October 16. When I ordered them the guy said I should see them in the second week of July; exactly when the original "availability" date was.
Now I don't know if it's the TireRack's fault or not, but I think that they are only putting up the dates based on what the people at Brembo tell them. So if this is true, then Brembo basically is screwing with me!
Are they just simply waiting for enough people to request these rotors and then make them? Is it that the 4Runner Sport rotors just don't have a high enough demand to make them right away? Either way, don't LIE and tell people that they will get their rotors in two weeks when it will take AT LEAST 4 MONTHS!!! So glad I did the brake pads when I did.
Now I just question saving the $80 by not ordering the Brembos at the other online site that sells them (assuming they actually had them in stock)...or ordering the more expensive Frozen Rotors.
End of rant, sorry people!
 
Greasefingers: What did you end up with?

Just wondering what you ended up getting for rotors instead. Since mine aren't too bad I might stick it out a little longer and see if I can finaly get the Brembos.
 
I was on Tire Racks waiting list for the Brembo rotors, and they kept telling me that the date kept being pushed back. Since i've been waiting 5 months for these rotors, i decided to go straight to the source...I called Brembo.

Well, it seems that they just flat out stopped production on the front Rotors (25858) and the rears (25676) will be coming in house in january some time, which means vendors will get them in Feb.

It seems to be that they are having some internal and quality control issues (heard a rumor that they had to scrape alot of rotors due to QC issues, which caused this decline in their surplus) They are now concentrating on their new contracts with making parts for new cars, which mean that they dont have enough facilities to work on quality OEM replacements for older cars.

Now i have to find another manufacturer to get Good quality Rotors from. I'm considering Frozen Rotors right now, but i still have a little more research to do before I pull the trigger.
 
Timeless...Thanks for the update! Yeah, I pretty much figured that they stopped production. I checked the other place online that listed the Brembo rotors and they are also out of stock. The guy said they're still in the system and he'll check when they'll get them but I am assuming it'll be the same wait as Tirerack. Let me know what rotors you choose as I'm still looking myself. The Frozen Rotors seem like a good option, but kind of pricey.
 
I talked to Frozen Rotors also, and they normally used Brembo's rotors in their freezing process. But since Brembo hasnt meen making them for a little while now, they are using Mountain Rotors(for the fronts) which from what I can gather is produced by a Japenese company, and supplies alot of auto manufactures as their OEM line. For the rear rotors, they are freezing another companies rotors..it was like Raybestos or something like that, I cant remember.

What I'm trying to find right now is a company were I can actually buy the Mountain Rotors from. I've been hearing alot of good things about them, but just cant locate a distributor of them.

I'm just really surprised that it is becoming this difficult to find good aftermarket rotors for my 4 runner! Its not like I own a ferrari or something!
