Not bad, but nothing special. Window switches, locks, mirror controls are all the same as the 4R. Wonder if we pretend we have a camry if the parts would be cheaper :)
 
But the wheels are nasty, not in a good way. Like in I can't believe the 80's wheels are coming back they are horrible.


Everything else looks pretty nice.
 
43mpg city and 39mpg highway for the Camry hybrid. Where is my 4Runner hybrid, Toyota? :crybaby:

Anyway, this has snuck onto the list for my wife's mommy-mobile. I generally don't buy non-hatch/non-wagons, but the size, gas mileage, and cost is really appealing. The SE V6 looks great (love the interior and wheels), but I'd want the hybrid drivetrain. XLE hybrid (with nav, i think) is $27k. That's pretty damn great considering that the Lexus CT200h w/ nav stickers for $35k.

Now, if the 4Runner got midcycle updates that included a white TE (or better yet, a Trail Team in while) and the interior improvements like the Camry has seen, I'd really consider trading up. A hybrid that pushed 25mpg... well, I'd be all over that.

Oh yeah, that'd be nice. I've seriously considered pulling all the carpet and having it sprayed with bed liner. My Husky Liners do a decent enough job for now though.

I'm perfectly happy with my current SR5 interior. That said, I wouldn't complain if they improved it.

What is wrong with recovering energy normally lost to braking via a hybrid drivetrain? It could still be 4WD, still longitudinal, still have low range, still have solid axle, still be body on frame. Those are the things that make a 4Runner so awesome. Wasting energy to brake pads and rotors in the form of heat doesn't make the 4Runner a better vehicle. Plus, you get far more life out of your brakes with a hybrid because you are effectively using an electric motor to slow the vehicle. The hybrid transmissions are sooooo much simpler compared to a traditional AT, as well. I could see a negative impact to towing (depending how they set up the system, of course) and there is definitely a cost premium. Instant torque of the electric motors and a huge span of gear ratios via a CVT (essentially uses a planetary gearset and an electric motor to control the planet gears) would make a far more flexible and thus efficient drivetrain. 4Runners are all about flexibility, right?
 
Hybrids are a dumb idea either way you turn it... especially gas-electric. The battery pack adds a ton of weight, lasts only 3 to 5 years, can cost up 1/3rd of the value of the car to replace, and costs a premium when you buy the car... all to gain a little extra mileage that does not pay back the initial investment and maintenance cost.

For most vehicles gas would have to be above $5.50 in order for the economics to make sense; especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a significant number of years.

The business case for a TDI-electric hybrid is a bit better; especially in countries where diesel is more accepted and a little cheaper. You are still adding the weight and dual drive-train cost... and with more fancy bits, more fancy bits will break eventually.

Frankly I'd take a TDI over my gasoline V6 any day. Better mileage, better torque. Who cares about the top end; you are driving an SUV; not a sport sedan.

Aside from that, diesel can be produced domestically from various sources (bio diesel, etc) and does not require rare-earth materials sourced from China. Clean diesel is not any more polluting than regular gas cars and before you start about zero emission hybrid, a hybrid is not zero emission because that coal power-plant spits out a fair bit of CO2 to power your hybrid (or spent nuclear rods if you are in it for the long haul).

I was realy impressed by diesel when I took a rental car in Germany. Very low fuel consumption, it was clean enough to go to city centers in Germany which is pretty much highest standart for low emissions in Europe. And man, I was doing up to 120 mph on those autobahns.

Hybrids work well only in certan temperature range, so far they use an engine to run A/C or heat. And battery loose they capacity in extreme cold. Maybe they come up with better Hybrid technology, but I don't think Hybrids worth their money now.

CR tested a 10 year old, 200k mile 2002 Prius versus the original performance data. The 200,000-mile question: How does the Toyota Prius hold up? Check out the chart in the link. Everything is near identical in mpg and acceleration. You're hybrid "facts" sound like the stuff out of the widely rebuked "dust to dust" study. Payback is long term with hybrids, I agree, but I place a value on using less fuel, so it is worth it to me. I spent $1600 or whatever on a leather interior for my 4Runner. Where is the payback on that? Based on my 14k miles/year, @ $4/gal gas, paying $2000 more for a hybrid version (based on the price difference between similarly equipped gassers v. hybrids) would be paid back in under 7 years if the 4Runner's fuel economy was boosted from 22mpg to 25mpg. That isn't entirely unreasonable, IMO. If it performs better than the regular V6, that payback becomes far easier to swallow.

BTW, the Prius is regularly listed as the one of the lowest cost to maintain cars. You go through brakes less frequently and oil changes, engine coolant, AT fluid, tires, etc is the same as a normal car. Poorly done hybrids are expensive to maintain, yes.... just like poorly done normal IC engine vehicles. Battery replacement costs are around $2k for a Prius, last I checked. No one I know with a Prius has had to, so getting firm numbers is difficult.

Regulations are already pushing diesel away in the US due to requirements of particulates and stuff like urea injection. Take a look at all the problems the newer VW TDIs are having on the reliability front that are directly related to their emissions equipment. I've taken a hybrid Toyota transmission apart as well as several of their 6ATs. I would say it has about 1/3 as many parts as their equivalent 6AT. It is brilliantly simple.

I'd consider a TDI in the 4Runner as a high torque drivetrain is well suited to an SUV, but the fact remains that there is no way to recover the energy lost when applying the brakes in a standard TDI drivetrain. Looking at the total energy equation, application of the brakes = energy lost in heat on a diesel. A hybrid can recover a portion of that energy. That is precisely why you see such large benefits in stop and go driving with a hybrid. If the price premium is the same, and considering I don't really tow, the hybrid has a bigger bang for buck for me.

Your home cooked bio diesels won't work in the new diesels. Diesel is still way cheaper to produce, on a large scale, using good ol' oil. I feel it will remain that way for some time. I don't like the method of rare earth metal extraction presently, but batteries have improved leaps and bounds over the past decade. They are still very much in their infancy. Batteries can also be recycled.

It depends what you consider to be a pollutant. Diesel has way higher NOX than gas. Every time I visit a European city, I immediately notice the smell. It isn't particularly unpleasant or anything, but it is there. Plus, one gallon of burned diesel has higher CO2 content than one gallon of gas.

What are you talking about power plants? I'm not talking about a plug-in. I'm talking about a hybrid that charges the batteries by using regen braking and the gas engine. No power plant required. I simply like the idea of recovering otherwise lost energy via regen braking and getting awesome torque at low RPM.

Very good. In my real life we have been using regen braking for many years and I would love to have a system on my vehicle. Does not have to be electric though as other methods are being tested, especially on class 8 and above vehicles. The low end torque is not so important to me but the extended range is nice.
