I wouldn’t take it on a road trip until after the owners manual break in. Don’t drive at a constant rpm(cruise control) during this phase, don’t bring the rpm up to redline, no heavy off-road. It’s in the manual. I thought it was 1000miles. Pretty much the same advice in every manufacturer. The main issue with a road trip is setting your cruise control and letting the motor sit a a constant speed while breaking in. All depends on how long you want the motor to last.

Just got back from a 3,000 mile trip in my '07, didn't give it a second thought at 140,000 miles on the odometer.

If mileage bothers you, go out to the local airport and rent a Camry; I put 2,900 miles on one and it cost me less than $300 upon return.

Edit: meant to agree with others that you're already broke in, so I wouldn't even worry about it.

Or tow, or hardcore off-road, or... people have different ideas of what a road trip is about. And some people also like to protect their investments. Probably why there is a thread on the topic. GASP!

It's cheap insurance. I am surprised that a lot of new vehicles don't call for a 600 mile break in oil change anymore, they just spec out the first change at 5,000 miles or whatever the intervals are.

I personally feel like that's too long. I want to get the first bits of fine metal out of the engine, but - literally - YMMV.

I typically do a oil and filter at 500 miles, then oil at 1000, then follow the intervals. If I'm on a long trip (10,000 miles to Alaska, for example) I do an oil and filter before I leave, just change the oil (no filter change) while on the trip, and then do a oil and filter when I get back.

You’re not driving a 1988 4Runner. Toyota’s engineers aren’t going to recommend an oil change schedule that will damage your vehicle or make them pay for warranty repairs.

I *am* old enough to remember changing the oil after 500 miles and then every 3000 miles after that. Been there. Done that. But if it makes you feel better, change the oil as frequently as you want. It won’t hurt anything.

Aren't most vehicle motors built to such high tolerances these days, essentially "broken in" at the factory and these trucks do come with synthetic oil, right? I seem to remember the first oil change on many BMWs is 15K or 25K km...

Well, having grown-up in a time when one changed oil after 500 miles break-in and then every 2-3K miles after that with non-synthetic oil bought at a gas station, I understand.

However, I would hope that the OP can have the trip of a lifetime worry-free because his brand new 4Runner is logically the last thing he needs to question...

Check tire pressures and GO!
Maybe go 1psi above what the sticker says for a tick more mileage and to buy you an extra 30 seconds if you get a slow leak.
