New CAT or O2 Sensors?

Well, here's my deal ... I've had probs with VSC / CEL and have confirmed that the code I get (I forget the number) relates to the CAT Converter. The weird thing is that, despite this, I've been able to pass CA smog inspection twice which makes me think that the problem might be related to the O2 sensors. Any ideas?

If I do have to replace the CAT, I was going to go with a Magnaflow but can't find the fitted CAT for my 03 T4R. That being the case, would I have any real problems going with a universal mount? I no longer live in CA and the T4R was purchased in Virginia so I don't need to get a CAT for California.

Well that blows. With throwing that code it probably would have been covered by the warranty. Unfortunately I can't help you with the question much but my gut says if it might be an O2 sensor I would want to try that before messing with the cat.

I can almost guarantee you that you need new O2 sensors. I have my original cat but am on my 3rd set of O2 sensors ('96 T4R , 255,000 miles):trophy:

Toyota + mileage = engine light and O2 sensor codes. it sucks, but get used to it.

Well, thanks to everyone for their help. I think I will go ahead and replace the O2 sensors and see how that goes. Does it make sense to do the AF sensor at the same time?

Well ...

It looks like it really is the cat converter that is bad. I had the O2 sensors changed, cleaned the MAF and had the throttle body cleaned. Everything was great for about 200 miles and the lights are all back on. Guess it really is time to replace the cat converter. Does anybody have any recommendations?
