New Consumer Reports 4Runner Report

I just read the latest new CR report on the 4Runner which now includes 2003 reliability data. They ranked all the parts with their top rating except for body integrity. Their predicted reliabilty is the best they give.

However, they said this about the engines.

"The V6's reliability has been poor; the V8's excellent."

This pisses me off as I have a 2003 V6 Limited. I guess that's price you pay for a new engine.

There has been some discussion on this.
From some recent info, the "poor" rating was because there was a recall for a fuel sender unit (or something like that) on pre-May 2003 V6's. Otherwise, no complaints.

My V6 has 7,000 miles with no problems yet. However, it does have a manufacture data of March 2003. Is there an easy way to find out if needs the fix without having to leave it at the dealer and use up one of my 6 free warranty rentals? I'd rather not drive a rented Corolla around while my 4Runner is at the dealer.

Also, where did you here that the poor rating was based on that recall?

over on edmunds.com is where I found out.

There is a TSB and it is an official recall item so you canjust call your dealer and see if it has been performed on your truck. It might have been done before you bought it.

It could also come from the valve lifter noise some have. But I have one of the very first V6's built and it's been rock solid.

Toyota says it is normal because of differences in the valve tolerances.

i was told when i bought mine to go with the v8 as its a proven engine on other models...im glad i did, but im sure the v6 will prove itself too...its toyota
