How much would it cost to have my engine replaced in my 4 runner. Its not dead yet, it only has 30k but I drive a ton. so im gonna replace my engine instead of buying a new one.

He must be an old Ford driver... 35K and motor dead...

Trust me we had a few 06/07 F150/Expeditions come in seeking new engines at 30k - 40k.

what are you talking about???
this is a toyota dude! although it is not bullet proof, but they are reliable as long as you take care them good. my previous old integra i sold it at it's 270k miles while still running strong! if you think your 4R is gonna die on you within 180k miles rank, then i think you bought a wrong vehicle. if i am keeping my 4R for long, i am looking to see it passes 200k mile clock.

It's kind of useless even discussing this now.

Besides, when you do need to replace or rebuild the engine, we'll probably have flying cars and teleporters! ;)

Whoa! sorry everyone...geez

Didn't know that I would be ridiculed for asking a question on the 4runner forum...Silly me I thought it was maybe a place where I could get some information instead of having a bunch of D-bags explain to me that toyota's run for more than 30K. I know that, or else I wouldn't have bought one, I am trying to find out what engines generally would cost (thank you Rook). I will have 200k on my 4runner within 2 years, so I was just trying to gain some info for the future.

The reason that I posted another topic on this to those who are whining is because I didn't get an answer the first time.

So sorry for trying to get information from a group that I thought would be a little more honest, and less condescending than the mechanics I have talked to, but I may have been naiive

Lighten up, Dorothy. You asked a question that most people felt was a bit premature. Try posting again in 2 years when you have at least 200,000 miles on your 4Runner.

Until then, just enjoy it and stop worrying.:bash:

BTW, if you think that the engine is the only thing you'll have to replace with the kind of mileage you drive, you are sorely mistaken. Did you ever consider all the other stuff that ages on a vehicle? Just about every part under your hood has an estimate service life, and it might not be quite as long as you think.

Expect to cough up money to replace things like your alternator, water pump, catalytic converter, timing chain, and plenty of costly sensors (MAF, O2, EGR, etc...) when you really start to pile on the miles.

But now we're talking about the future again. Oh well, just wanted to give you a dose of reality for things to come. It's not like you're going to pop a new engine in a 4Runner with 200,000 miles and have a new 4Runner again.

well if you get 200K in 2 years... write to Toyota... they may give you a discount on a new 4Runner... of just trade it in and buy a new one.

well, just a reminder for you, as rook's link about the price of the motor, that maybe the price of a short block only, i dont know. and like the description said, not included all electrical components. which means maybe not including all vacuum hoses too. at that 200k miles, you may also have to check on the transmission, of course suspension components need to replace because they are going to be worn out eventually due to the miles.
so $15k is just the really base rough quote, and plus all necessary components, harnesses, labor..... that sounds like will easy top you to $20k plus at the end of the bill. at that rate, i may just consider sell the 4R and get a another one cuz $20k to just replacing/repairing sounds a little too crazy to me.
it's just my opinion and may not give you any answer to the topic at all. but if that situation happens to me, i will not worry about it. not to mention if you have allowance on the vehicle from the company, i think they would tell you to get another vehicle rather than fixing it, right?

Please see #2: http://toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5809

You think you're going to get much help when you call out our members like that? Lighten up Francis...

That link posted on trademotion is for a new engine from Toyota. You probably aren't going to be buying a "new engine", but more likely a remanufactured engine which is going to be much cheaper. Also, I have no clue what our engines will cost in three years. I'm going to assume they're going to depreciate in costs like everything else. There are going to be 4Runners that get wrecked, but have perfectly good engines so they'll pull the engines and resale them. In 3 years there are going to be used engines available so the cost is not going to be that much.

Agreed. The more 4th gens on the road the better the pick'n. Give it a few years like sharp said, and there will be plenty of low mileage used motors out there at your local junkyards.

Just wanted to chime in to agree with Even Steven.

Most of these parts are mileage (usage) rated as opposed to time rated. You are going to need to practically replace the whole vehicle.

If I were you, I wouldn't be putting 100k miles/year on such a vehicle. Why not put those kind of miles on a vehicle of lower value and enjoy your T4R?

what are you doing putting 100k miles on a vehicle a year anyway?!?! :bash:

My dad is good friends with one of the head Toyota mechanics and he said the 3gen 4runners were engineered to go 300k and the 4ths are engineered to run for 500k. whether or not that is true time will only tell.

If you have the V8 we all know that it has proven to be bullet proof in the tundra years before being put into the 4runner. The new V6 seems to be going in the same direction. I have a buddy with over 120k on in 03 I'm sure there are others with even more millage.

But i agree with what others have said. If you are pushing well over 200k in 3 years. the motor is not going to be the only thing that needs replacing.

Back in my Auto Tech school days (yes, I graduated from Tech school before college), I had a list of the average life expectency for various automotive components. I was kinda surprised to learn that things like alternators, for example, are engineered with a specific range for the service life.

I'm sure everyone knows that wear items (like brake pads) are expected to wear out and be replaced during the service life of the vehicle, but how many people realize that the same may be true of non-wear components?

Now if you take the theory a step further, if you have a vehicle like a Toyota that can easily surpass 200K - 300K miles without needing a major rebuild, does the manufacturer take that into consideration when choosing other components? In other words, if my engine and transmission is going to last 250K miles, shouldn't my alternator last that long too?

Back in the day, 100K miles was just about all you could expect from the average vehicle, so it was a waste of money to build other related components that would outlast the vehicle itself. Have they stepped it up a bit since vehicles now last well beyond that now?

Despite probably disliking you the most out of all the people who shat themselves when they thought I was going to replace an engine with 30k on it, this is exactly the information that I wanted, and I appreciate it.

I wasn't trying to be difficult, I am just planning ahead, and trying to figure out what the best option for the future. P.S. I was in a pissy mood, and was frustrated with the spectrum of answers I was getting from mechanics during my regular oil changes. No hard feelings man, I just tend to plan ahead, in some cases, too far ahead.

P.S. Love your show, your sister is hot. (I might get some flack for that one)
