Very excited to finally be a 4runner owner - just bought a 96 limited last month w 177K. I hope to be posting soon about my first project on it which is patching up a weepy rear differential housing. She's a fine piece, but really rusty undercarriage thanks to all the salt up here, and previous owner not caring enough. If all goes well, we'll be driving out to Colorado in 3 weeks to spend the winter out there. Wish me luck!

I would like to replace the entire thing but I am doing a ghetto fix for the time being - planning on draining, sanding down, degreasing and JB welding, then coating in Por15. There are some good posts on here about people doing the same project. I am curious if there is an aftermarket quick fix kit bc it seems like a common problem. I will start a new thread in 3rd Gen when I get going. Here is what it looks like right now:



Once I get out to Colorado I will find a complete cover in better condition at a bone yard and do it right. Because I'm in CT and leaving so soon it doesn't make sense to me to be shipping a giant part here from less rusty parts of the country (not had any luck finding anything locally) and I don't think I'll have time for the full replacement before I take off anyway.
