If one was to buy a new (truck) frame for a custom 4x4 vehicle with solid front and rear axles, what options are there?


This is purely hypothetical.
I was wondering about building a vehicle from the ground up and what parts I would use ie frame, axles, engine etc. It wouldn't have to be a rock crawler but I would want it to be very off road capable. I would want it to be simple, reliable, and easily maintained. Not worried about aerodynamics, fuel economy (although it should be reasonable) or comfort/luxury.

I own a 3rd gen and have had some costly maintenance bills recently because of the IFS and knowing about the looming LBJ failure Ijust began to think what would a strictly utilitarian vehicle be comprised of

Feel free to share your knowledge or recommend some proven vehicles but please don't chime in with "theres nothing wrong with your IFS" or "just fix it yourself" this is just a what if scenario

If your building a rock crawler there is no substitute for a Jeep. already set up for lots of suspension travel, with live axles and coils all around. And its pretty simple frame etc, with lots of available parts, both from wrecks and aftermarket that are cheaper than for non common, or less common cars. There are lots of really simple reasons that most rigs on the trail started as some sort of Jeep wrangler. TJ, JK's etc. Readily available, easy access to parts for cheap prices.

To OP..They have some awesome builds, and they can supply you a lot of stuff for great price to build a great offroad buggy. The best thing about the chassis like goat built is all you have to do is weld it together the engineering was already planned out and you add all the fun stuff. However, if you go to a solid front axle your going to run into ball joint failure, u-joint failure, death wobble, track bar issues, etc. it's just a different set of problems that you won't experience on IFS.

If I were to build another one, I would do the tube frame "kit" instead from one of the mfg's. But more likely I would do one of the RZR conversions. I have a riding buddy that put a 66 VW body on his RZR. It even has the VW data plate, and is licensed as a '66 VW. Pretty cool. Your not going to use it as much of a street rig any way.
