Sup Everyone!

Always wanted to own a 4Runner for as long as I can remember. I just purchased a 06 4.7 LMTD, love it so far.. however...

I did a bit of research prior to buying her, more or less about the differences in engines, V6 vs. V8. Found out about the interference timing belt. I was relieved to know that this service was performed prior to my purchase as well that it has been dealer serviced since day one.

Then I took the test drive, noticed the driveline clunk & from my past experience driving an explorer, I knew exactly what it was, but didn't realize how much of an issue it really is after owning it & digging deeper in the search query here. I figured it was a small deal, that grew much bigger as I read into it. Reg greasing it is... I suppose.

Then, to my surprise... (V8 guys know where I'm going) Manifold! Started reading into this last night.. Not cool! No aftermarket support??? Really? V6 manifolds are avail and 07 and up are also... come on man!!! Any further progress with this? I'm tempted in buying a new manifold, having a trusted welder re-weld around the mounting plate areas for added support & then wrapping them with exhaust heat wrap to protect them.. Still looking into my options here... Egnine tick goes away when warm as everyone else experiences..

Anyways, love the new whip! Taking her to the back country for a nite camping tonight at some of my old favorite spots.. I've been without 4x for nearly 3 years now & I'm starting to get the shakes... lol

All the best to you all! Talk soon..

Here in the Okanagan!

Welcome! I just purchased a 1998 SR5 in April in Vancouver and brought it home to the OK.... After lots of thought and research, (a year!) I decided on a 3rd gen 1. affordable, 2. tons of parts, info and add-ons, 3. according to my research-- probably the best all-around and durable of all 4Runners (will probably get feedback on this!!) ...... and its 1/2 the !@#$% size of my old Chev!! Way more fun to drive!!! Over the coming years I plan on lots of improvements as the $$ allows!! Have fun!

Thank you! I do like the 3rd gens, don't get me wrong, but I had to finance the vehicle and 06 & up were my only options, so I bought it not knowing of these common problems. Otherwise, she runs like a champ & in very good condition for the year, mint really. Cheers !

Heh Jay Nice! Any 4runner is fantastic! Unfortunately, I've heard of the financing problem many times! You definitely got a nice truck--- they're a little bigger, more power with that V8, and more bells and whistles! The problems with these trucks are tiny compared to the domestics!! You'll be in driving heaven with this baby, I'm sure.

My 03 v8 has had this issue since I bought it last year. I finally got sick and tired of it, so I brought it to an exhaust specialist in Ottawa (Stebro LTD) to have it fixed.

For $1750 they're building custom headers made from stainless steel with a lifetime warranty. I decided to go all out and have them do a dual exhaust as well so my finally cost will be more but $1750 is pretty decent consider the new manifolds and gaskets from Toyota run about $2500 for the parts only.

My 4runner hasn't been as amazingly reliable as previous Corolla's myself and my family have owned but I'm sure alot of that has to do with the mass amounts of electronics it has, nevertheless its still a great vehicle with an unbeatable drivetrain.

A fellow calgarian! Welcome!
I have a v8 as well and loving it!

Thanks guys, starting to feel the love here, much appreciated. Nice to see someone else from CGY also.. ;)

Aside from these common issues, the truck runs like a champ, I'm extremely happy with the purchase. I think the V8 was a good choice for me, the power of this engine is sufficient enough but anything less might have been a disappointment. That's just me though..

So with this new SS setup through Stebro LTD, are they going to build a jig for further production of this setup or is this a one time deal only? I'm interested in this, but how did they manage to fabricate a header for the V8 when everyone else states that there is not enough clearance? Is it because of the year? Are they able to help with my 06?

Also, has anyone ever written a letter to Toyota about this manifold issue with a count of people also experiencing this issue? I’m sure they’re well aware of it. IMO they should be re-designing a more robust manifold due to the amount of complaints & with not having any aftermarket support for these. I know with my Dodge Magnum (lx platforms in general), we experienced problematic & premature wear on the factory tension struts, with enough feedback, Chrysler redesigned this part to a much beefier heavy duty part that rectified this issue. Toyota should also consider doing the same. The manifold needs to be superseded to a new revision with a possible discount for the premature wear on the original part.

I’m considering taking this action with documented support to Toyota for their review.

Thanks again for the replies everyone!

Cheers

manifold problems....

I agree! Toyota should offer something for this common issue... still $1750 sounds like a lot but consider the alternative:
In the last 2 yrs I owned a Chevy:
1. blew rear end $2600 (no wrecker supply as everyone else is looking)
2. replaced 2 power window actuators (retail $600)
3. 2 door handles broke off in my hand (GM $75 ea, got some from Lordco $15)
4. power look cylinder on drivers door failed (?$$)
5. AC failed last summer with a loud fzzzzz), compressor apparently...
The list goes on.... this truck was newer than mt 4Runner!!
Enough said, LOVE my 4Runner....

I'm not sure he made a jig, I did mention that there aren't any aftermarket solutions and he had my truck for three weeks so he would have had plenty of time. As for how they managed to fit everything, that I don't know because I haven't seen my truck yet but I'm going to pick it up today.

I agree with what's being said, It's just embarasing to have bought a new truck & have people on the outside thinking you've got major engine issues when it's only an exhuast leak. I can live with it, just anyoying & embarassing.

Righton! Hope everything goes well for you, I'm sure you'll be posting the results shortly!
