New, going to buy a 4runner, questions.

Hey everybody I'm about to buy a 4runner but i just have a few questions before i do.

I'm looking at the 1996-1998 ones are the pre 96 ones better mechanically?

Are there any known problems that i should check for when buying one.

which engine is better 4 or 6? with manual or automatic.

Here's a rundown of the years and the 3rd gens got better upgrades and power and in '99 they got even better ergonomically with more comforts,safety and better headlamps.

I was just reading that link you posted and in '97 something like 124,496 4R were sold while in '02, the last 3rd gen, only 77,000 were sold. I guess when people know that a newer version will be coming out they wait for it.

Isn't it about time for a 5th gen 4Runner sometime in the next couple of years? 3rd gen was out for 7 years or so, 4th gen is going on 5 years now, so...?

I think that the six cylinder is the best bet....have fun.

From what I have heard, the 3.0L V6 in the pre '96 has sludge problems.

I think that you will be better off if you stick with the next generation 6.

Toyota should have another gen out as a '09 model but they are being tight lipped right now.

yeah i think i'll get the v6 either a manual or auto doesn't matter to me whatever i can find. Now i heard that some had the head gaskets go is that true for this generation.

Oh another quick Q is it possible to fit a diamond plate truck toolbox in the back behind the seats and over the wheel wells, its not a deep one or anything
