Hey guys just wanted to say hey. I just bought an 04 4runner. We do the Overlanding thing and have always done it in a suburban but after always dealing with mechanical and reliability issues I decided to go with a Toyota. We looked around and 4runners are hard to find in our area we were going to go with a 3rd gen but after always having suburbans it felt tiny. I think we got lucky and found a weird deal. We found an 04 4runner in excellent condition, runs perfect. He also did a bunch of maint. about 2k miles ago with all the receipts. He bought it for his wife but after having it for like 6 months she said it was too big and didn't want it.

He has the timing belt, water pump, plugs and wires, hoses, CVs, etc.. All replaced.

The weird thing was that at some point the odometer was replaced or something because it's a box c title. So no one could get financed for it with a car loan. I picked it up from him for 10k.

Not too much to say about myself though, I live in Tucson, AZ and work as a full time firefighter/ EMT. We do a ton of outdoors stuff, mountain biking, camping, etc.. Ive been on some other forums and always had the name BurbanAZ.

Seems like a good forum though, look forward to getting to know you guys.

I just joined up too. I also had a suburban before my 4runner! Instead of going with the 4th gen like you, I had my eyes set on an off-white (I like to call her Pearl) 3rd gen unlimited with 127K, picked it up for 8grand. My suburban was a Victory Red 99' K2500, and while it was a beast, the constant mechanical problems became entirely too much for me. The culmination of my frustration occurred when my dad-unbeknownst to me- cranked up the torsion bars. A rearend rebuild, 4 new rear drums, a new front end, new calipers front and rear, and a few grand later and it still drove like a POS.

So I got me a T4r and joined the club! What plans do you have for it?

Thanks for the welcome guys. I think I'm really going to enjoy this truck. Yea I like my suburban but I'm just tired of always messing with it. The biggest problem was that I don't trust it to get us home so it was hard to take it on the type of trips we do. Here's what my suburban looks like.



 
What I think would be a stellar mod would be swapping the GM 14 bolt from "our" suburbans into the 4runners. It would be interesting to see how the 3rd gen would compare to the 4th with that mod.

Does your burb have the 5.7?

EDIT: I obviously didn't look very hard at the picture. I really wanted the 6.5 instead of the 5.7. never felt underpowered, just wanted a diesel!

Might as well swap in a kingpin 60 up front too. Match made in heaven.
 
Couldn't agree more. You would think that Toyota would recognize that they have a solid consumer base from people like us!
