*EDITED/UPDATED BELOW*
Hey guys, just joined.
I've owned a 98 SR5 for about 3 years now (@185k now). I had an issue last summer with my radiator and subsequently my transmission too. I guess a line somewhere through my radiator broke and coolant got mixed into my tranny. I had no idea and must have driven on it for a short bit of time until finally it started slipping - at which time I took it into a shop for repair.
Well long story short - they basically patched it up instead of fixing the real problem (the tranny) by replacing the broken radiator and lines as well as flushing the tranny a few times just to get it running. $700, and a year later I think I now have to deal with the real problem of fixing the actual tranny. I'm taking it to a shop tomorrow morning to get the damage, but I'm terrified! Don't feel like dropping $2000 on it but I feel it's inevitable.
The truck started shaking/shuddering a few months ago right before I came home from school. It would only do it at low RPMS at around 20 mph, then it stopped for about a week and started doing it at around 55+ mph.. then it started doing it all the time at any speed during acceleration - foot off the gas = no shaking. I thought it might be the drive shaft or a joint somewhere under the car. I talked to a few people they said I'd know if it was that and that it could be related to a torque converter or a bad mount or something.. I'm thinking the tranny is shot.
a few things:
1 - (for the mechanics out there) - anyone dealt with similar problems with this generation? If so, what sort of issues am I looking at within the tranny? The symptoms include - shuddering/shaking at random speeds/acceleration rates & engine light (the little picture of it) lighting up yellow.
2 - If it does come down to me having to replace the tranny, I figure the trucks a 98, I'm probably not going to find too good of a tranny out there to straight up swap, so do I go for the rebuild, buy an aftermarket one new, or save up and do some sort of upgrade/full engine & tranny swap (to a V8 if possible) as sort of a pet project?
3a - I'm also in the market for a new exhaust system - found a flomaster 40 series I've hear good things about, is it worth it or should I just go stock?
3b - It's not actually my full exhaust that needs to be replaced, the muffler basically rotted off from the middle of the muffler through the tailpipe, everything else is in tact - do I go for? Is there a better way to go?
Thanks guys, I anticipate and appreciate the help in advance. Even if you can't answer all of my questions, any insight would help as I'm new to dealing with these sort of things but am always willing to learn from people with experience.
