New guy.......just bought a new 2008 Sport

Greetings Gents,

Ok.....I'm now out of the Grand Cherokee V8 business, as of last Saturday.

What a difference the new Yota is!!...... SAAAMOOOOOOTH and SOLID!!!!!

It's a Sport V8 2WD, salsa red pearl.........BUT.....NO rear wing(the fat thing looks like tits on a boar hog, and ruins the vehicle's clean lines......but that's just my opinion, and other's thoughts may differ), and NO moonroof(sooner, or later, they leak). This may be a one-of-a-kind, as I couldn't find another one like it.

As for options, I bought the black leather seats, homelink, JBL 10 speaker set-up, wheel locks, SS door sill protectors, and the carpet mat set.

The wife loves it, and we got 19.8mpg(into about a 20mph headwind)per the computer, when I brought it home from Dallas. I'll manually check the mileage at the second fill-up.

After exploring the forum. I'm thinking about the "fog light mod", as years ago I did the same mod to my '92 3000GT-VR4.

One question......does this thing actually NOT have a transmission dip-stick??!!!......and is transmission fluid NEVER changed??!!

Second question....which of the factory service manuals do I "need". I understand that there are five of them total. For the time being, I'll get a Haynes.

BTW.....I'm still trying to get the Homelink to operate my ancient garage door opener.

The computer is roughly 10% high -- you should see a lower number when you do the manual calculations.

Correct, no dipstick. Theoretically, the fluid does not need to be changed.

Second question....which of the factory service manuals do I "need". I understand that there are five of them total. For the time being, I'll get a Haynes.

If you want manuals, you'll need to go with the Factory Service Manuals. As far as I can find, neither Clymer, Haynes, nor Chilton have produced a repair manual for the 4th generation 4Runner.

Congrats on the purchase. I just moved into an '08 Limited 4WD myself, bought it 12/26/08. Like it very much so far.

As to the mileage...don't pay any attention to it AT ALL until your truck is good and broken in. It's been my experience with newer vehicles that until they "loosen" up after they're broken in, they won't give you the mileage you can expect from then on until it starts to wear out on down the road.

My 2000 Tundra gave me about 16 mpg for the first 1000-1200 miles. Now, it gets more like 18 (with 130k miles on it no less). The '06 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4 I traded in on my 4Runner gave me 18 mpg until it hit about 900 miles, and did roughly 22 mpg from then until I traded it Friday.

Of course, I drive "like an old lady" (no jack-rabbit starts, no "floor it to pass and then keep flooring it" passing...etc). When I took delivery of my 4Runner (technically: V8 4WD Limited) the computer said 18.2 mpg for the 384 total miles that were on the odo. In driving it another 200 miles or so over the last 5 days, that number has already moved up to 18.9 - and that's hyrbid driving (some city/some highway).

Went to China-Mart today, and got some Mobile 1 5w-30 and a Fram filter. It's still kinda hard to believe that I won't need to check on the transmission fluid......but that's GREAT!!......all those years of slopping that stuff all over myself.....sigh.......

Toyota tells me that all five of the factory service manuals will total 470 bucks. I may only get a couple of them.

I'm still trying to get the Homelink to program.......must not be holding my teeth right.

I thought I was the only one who called Wallyworld China-Mart.I've set the past 3 vehicles homelinks, they're pretty much the same as far as ''hoop-jumping'' steps and procedures.I know the 'running codes' on some of the newer ones make you get up to the opener motor and push the 'learn' button, it's there by the lightbulbs.Your teeth have nothing to do with programing your homelink. It's your tongue, it cannot be inside your mouth when attempting this. Please note...some states have laws regarding this practice. I'm sure you wouldn't want to end up in jail on NewYears day!:awais:

Myself I would stick with the Toyota OEM oil filter.

You guys will be really hurt when you check actual milage vs. the computer. It's about 2mpg less than shown on average.

It is helpful to see how different driving techniques change your MPG, but it's not accurate compared to dividing milage vs gallons on the tank you used.

You're NOT getting hybrid milage with your V8, sorry.

Yep........I'm fully aware that most any vehicle's computer mpg average reading is an estimate. Having said that, even a "full tank" is subjective....in that automatic pump shut-offs vary due to rate of flow and pressure build-up.

I'm sure that most everyone knows that the only sure way to accurately fill the gas tank, is to manually "top-off" the tank by slowly filling the tank to the filler neck each visit to the gas station. Of course, then divide miles by gallons.

Funny......this brings to mind old memories of how I would test my childrens' abilities to do long division in their heads, on family trips. Sadly.....I think that it's becoming a lost art......in today's society.

BTW.....Zimm, I think Subsonic was using the word "hybrid" to describe his mix of driving, and not a hybrid vehicle.

Hey.......considering that NASCAR and INDY race cars are STILL running out of gas on their final laps........how close can anyone measure their average mpg on the fly???
