New guy question abouf roof rack

I bought a '99 4Runner Limited, only one of the two vehicles I've enjoyed. (First was a '57 Bug.)
My only questions right now are: how do I remove the stock roof rack? How do I get it back on? And, will there be holes in the roof if I remove it?
This is my first 4Runner. Even my wife has fallen in love with it, despite having trouble leaping into the passenger seat.
Any help appreciated!

While you can take it off, there will be holes, can you explain why you want to take it off and then put it back on?

I'm wasn't certain that I would want to remove the rack; just wanted to know how difficult or easy it might be to take it off and then put it back on, if it ever was necessary and what treatment the roof would require.

the rack or the rack mounts?

The roof rack cross rails are easily removed-you have to pry up the "tabs" at the back of the rails-then just slide the cross rail pieces out the back.

The ribs in between are even easier-unscrew the thumb screws and pull up.

You will still be left with the "rails" on both sides of the roof that holds the pieces in place. Those you really don't want to mess with or risk leakage.
