New Guy w/ an 86 4x4

I am new to this forum, but not new to forums or toyotas. I just got this 86 back in july...and am in love with this thing. the only thing it REALLY NEEDS is lockers/limited slips front and rear. When i bought it it had 38x14.5 inch tires on it, but recently traded a guy for some 35x12.5...the tired 22re just couldn't turn those 38s even with 4.88 gears and i got tired of feeding it...so now im happy with 35s and need to remove the body lift that was required to just barely clear the 38s, lol.

I also own a 2000 Toyota Tacoma which i have turbo'd and occasionally race, im really into autocross...but play around with drag and what not. I am an avid member of CustomTacos.com.

i plan on using this site about as much as i use that one... A LOT!!!

my plans so far for the 86 is solid front axle, update the driveline to a 3RZ/5 speed and supercharge it. Long travel front and rear. And limited slips in both diffs or maybe a selectable locker up front...not sure yet...funds aren't available at the time.

Welcome aboard Garrett! That's a pretty clean 4RNR. The problem isn't the motor, its the gearing was all wrong. With 38s it should've had 5.71s. 35s need 5.29s, and 33s need 4.88s. But I like the direction ur heading with it.

i read somewhere that 4.88s were good for 35s but that very well may have been for the 5 speeds and i have the autotragic...o well, it has a lil more pep with the smaller tires, for obvious reasons. No complaints here. 38s make it pretty difficult to trail ride anyway.

I've got a buddy with 5.29s and 37s, and it's a dog. I blow him away off the line and leave him in the dust on hills. And it's not just the tire diameter, the rotating mass plays a big part. It's different on a trail rig, but I think anything over 35 is just too much for a truck with a stock 22RE to stay street friendly, no matter what gearing you have. Add that leach of an automatic transmission, and it's no wonder that truck is hating life.

I'm running 5.29 and 33s with a 22RE/five speed, and I love it.
