New guy's mileage test.

So we've had the new yota for a few weeks now.

It's a 2008 Sport V8 2WD, with about 1200 miles on it so far.

Last weekend we took a trip to Dallas,with head-winds both directions(can't catch a break), totaling about 300 miles.

The computer said 19.7mpg, while my own calculation showed 18.8mpg.....yes, I manually/carefully topped off the tank on both fill-ups.

Not a bad comparison, as the computer was about 4.8% high.

Other tests will follow as the engine breaks-in.

So far, it's a great truck.....and pulls hills well, without dropping out of overdrive hardly ever. But then, there are hills and there are HILLS.

As you've found, the computer is notorious for being too optimistic. At least it's a nice temperature gauge.

+1 on the congrats! Here's some food for thought:

I've had my '08 V6 sport 4WD for 2 months now but only have about 3,200 miles on it and she's not my DD. But I DO travel about 1600 miles per month and in the winter, the 4R is my trip vehicle. I use my CC religiously.

As with all my vehicles, I keep strict mileage records and hand calculate at every fill-up. The 4R's computer is typically conservative so far by about 1-2 MPG (as it is on my other cars). By hand, I've been averaging 19.2 MPG this month while cruising at between 70 and 75 MPH. I definately take a hit over 70.

Last month's average was 17.9 and I attribute the recent increase to slight enine break-in, the addition of full synthetic oil and driving SLIGHTLY slower.

I have experimented a little and after a fill-up and immediately jumping on the highway, I ran at 65 MPH for 1 hour and the computer showed 24.7 before I stepped back up to 75. That's hopefully at least 22 MPG in the real world.

The above numbers are probably 95% highway, 5% rural/urban

For my '08 V8 4WD...

Measuring over 28,609 miles, the gas mileage discrepency for me is roughly 3.5%

Reported = 18.9 MPG whereas measured is 18.3MPG. I'm missing 2 receipts (753 miles) though.

my average since new is 19.1 and the gauge reads 20.85 on average (recorded each fill up). Difference is 1.76.

What gets me is that it is not off by a consistent amount.
