New here and looking to buy.

Well, I've been doing quite a bit of research on vehicles lately and have decided that a V6 4Runner will fit me nicely. Thanks to everyone on this forum for all of the great information you provide!

My question - I have found that most dealers are coming in at around 16-18K for an 04-06 w/35k - 50k miles and most have dropped prices by almost $2K in the last few weeks...any suggestions as to where to start negotiation? I know that they need to get these off the lots, especially since some of the pics show tons of snow on the ground, but with the sudden reduction in price can I expect to negotiate much off? I'm also trying to use the time of the month to my advantage.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Of course you can negotiate. Just because they lowered the price doesn't mean they don't have wiggle room.
Remember, they can't make you buy it. Go as low as you (reasonably) can.

Decide exactly what you want beforehand- 4wd, color, trim level (SR5/Limited/Sport). Then just start looking and see what you find- It took me about 4 months to find mine because I specifically wanted certain options (no spoiler, sunroof, 4x4, v6 and black or white, low milage, under 20k....ect). I put all the listings- Recycler, Ebay, Craigslist ect. in my homepage so I'd see new listings everytime I opened my browser. If you think about it enough and look hard enough you'll get exactly what you want ...it just might take a little while (law of attraction/ intention).

Once you get into the negotiations with the dealer/owner be prepared to walk and don't let them see you're too ready to buy. Mention you have other options your considering to give yourself some leverage. Look at Kelly Blue book and the classifieds in your area to get a realistic margin of what that specific one is going for...and more importantly- actually selling for! since sometimes people are asking too much and you'll see their ad for months.

You can always talk someone down because they usually anticipate it and ask a bit more than they expect to get. Dealers usually get their autos at auction or as trades and other than any labor for reconditioning it, they've paid a lot less than it's listed for and there's room for negotiation if they need the sale. (I talked the dealer down $4k from what it was listed as!)

I went late in the day only about an hour before they closed, (after I had already checked it out without any salesmen hassling me) and it was also towards the end of the week and the end of the month. They needed to move vehicles and I showed them I was serious but also would walk if I didn't get the number I told them I would pay.

But be the first to grab that deal when you see it - have your financing in place, know how much your gonna put down, what the interest rate you can get and your credit score is ect. because the 4Runner is one of the best vehicles on the road and there are always people like yourself looking for one. Good Luck!!!

Sales are down
Dollar is weak
Oil is $135 a barrel

3 reasons why should be able to steal that ride for what they paid for it.
Find the wholesale price and go $50 over.
Stick to your guns and lowball ;):
