5th generation? I need the car for off road use but I spend a significant amount of time doing regular driving as well. The recent Times article said "highways are the car's kryptonite" or something to that effect.
I was interested in the new Limited edition, which I'm hoping has the correct suspension to give a decent ride on the highways as well as off road.

I'm probably not the best one to give an opinion on this. Coming from a full size pickup, I think the 4Runner limited rides like a car. During my test drive I took it out on the highway and I thought it did fine.

I pick it up today after work. I went with the beige over the black mainly because living in South Carolina, I was afraid the seats would catch on fire during the summer. :lmao:

I've 1500 miles on my BlizPrl SR5. Just returned from a 600 mile weekend, and I LOVE this thing. It's big, powerful, roomy, and I really like driving it, I feel safe. Wife loves it.

My trip computer reads 20.1 and I have not reset it since new. Passing power is very good, and the tranny is smooth and controllable.

As to the comment about 'rides like a car' ... well ... yeah, a little, but that's what I want. Buy a TE if you want off road. Me, I want a nice, big, comfy, hunky, strong, S-U-V. If I wanted a T-R-U-C-K, I'd have bought a Tundra.
It is not soft, and does not have a rock-n-roll ride. It does exhibit some fore-and-aft dive on hard acceleration/braking - certainly not severe or objectionable.

Here are my dislikes so far: I HATE the display in the dash (mpg/compass/etc) and the display on the radio. Both disappear when I'm wearing poloroids, and the radio has a plastic face that glares in sunlight.
And it is a little more susceptible to wind buffeting on the highway than I would have expected. Again, not a big deal - it is a big vehicle after all.

I put running boards on, which IMO is needed if any family members are short, and of course changed the weiny-horn. I have HIDs on order, but that's just me, as the stock headlights are pretty good.

All I can say is get one, it's great. Model choices are up to you. From what I'm reading the NAV option may not be the best, so I'm glad that I didn't.

I think it rides fine on the road. 800 miles so far, mostly getting on and off the highway and it is very comfortable. I was driving a Suburban, so I'm used to SUV riding. The 4Runner definitly rides better on the hardball than my 2001 Land Cruiser, but it was mostly for "off road" driving, which it did quite well.

I'm going on a 4000 mile road trip this summer around the Southwest, both dirt and blacktop, so I will definitly have a more formed opinion after that.

When you wear the shades, does the display disapper whether or not the headlights are on?

I think the NY Times review said it doesn't ride like a car and made it sound as if it's a terrible ride on highways. Your info indicates it's a lot better ride on the freeway than a pure truck, so that's a good thing.
